How far into the build are you?

We just broke ground. Footers are in. Starting block work in a few days and will be ready to start stone in about 10 days. Need to order stone in the next few days

Other than having a barn attached to it, what makes your house a "modern farmhouse"?

Is the "barn" portion of it for the housing of horses?

Where are you? Limestone and a metal rib roof would be a great farmhouse look.

Are you really sure about different siding as shown in the gables of the elevations? Looks builder and tractish to me.

The drawing shows a mix of sidings -- vertical and horizontal, and shakes in the gables. is this still the plan?

I'd keep the stone at the foundation level and not bring it up on the house.

I started showing this but did not finish.

And too late, but this also shows the barn differently with a narrower front, making the gable smaller and giving it some separation from the house.

97 3/4 too many things. White around a working barn will need painting every couple of years. Board and batten and metal roof vertical lines can be an issue. It’s just too builder cliched. Simplify. No more than 2 materials.

I’d vote no stone at all to keep it simple.

but if you’re set on the stone, it should coordinate with the roof. Do you have a picture of the roof co,or you’re gping with

The house is fussy and formless. What it needs is boldness and physical integrity.

Make the entire height of the main house wall stone all the way to the roof gable apex.

Shingle the entire barn.

Maybe the garage could be vertical siding but its difficult to know without a 3D model.

Here's an example. It even has excessive window panes.

I've been doing this for a very long time. The use of multiple materials and changing materials half way up a wall began with tract house developers. That's not what you should be emulating for your home. Your windows are from 2 1/2 centuries ago so why not look to the past when houses were not being designed and sold by the dozen.

Thanks for all the feedback. The sliding shown in the plan is not 'set'. The architect was trying to show some different options. And the windows are still to be chosen (likely opting for single or no panes).

Yes - the barn is functional for horses.

These drawings are "elevations" and there should be 4 of them plus a roof plan if anyone is going to be able to understand the design without a 3D view.

Your designer has created a roof "wedgie" where the main house roof meets the barn roof.

Buy him some 3D software and introduce him to the 21st century.

Give each building its own material so the buildings appear logical.

Try moving the overhead doors to the left side of the garage.

Try stretching the entry porch to the end of the main house and delete one or both of the little gables..

Try showing vertical lines for the metal roofing instead of the horizontal sketchy lines.

Try using arbitrary colors to delineate elements. The design is suffering from lifeless drawings.

Why do you want to attach the barn to the house?

I had a client that lived about a half mile from me and he owned horses. One of the horses would fall over and not be able to get itself back up, so my client would call me to help him get his horse back on his feet (hoofs). I am not a horse person and rarely did the horse fall down in the Spring, Summer, or Fall and rarely during daylight hours. I will admit it was kind of fun watching northern lights while seeing how much ice can form on my beard. I never figured out why the temperature of -9º F made a horse fall down.

I like the gable above the main entry door, but it does remind me of Papa Gable, Mama Gable, and Baby Gable.

Why not separate the barn more from the house , with a breezeway type structure. Horses aren’t as smelly as most people think, but they aren’t roses. That’s just one of the reasons that the barn is usually off to the back. I can’t imagine attaching paddock fencing to the house is going to add to its looks.

I drew the design on my own computer. I'm no architect and struggle with getting my software to do the roof angles just right but this is the best I can do with a 3D rendering.

The problem with learning residential design from experience is that you often get the test before the lesson.

I've never heard the term "roof wedgie" before, but I like it--not the roof wedgie, mind you-- just the label. In our office, we've always referred to those as "problem areas" in a roof. The term "wedgie" better communicates the specific problem in what we formerly labelled as problem areas. "Roof wedgie" has been adopted as the preferred term in our office from now on...just hope it's not copyrighted.
