You want to make the house more modern by using a single window muntin like this farm house??

I like it the way it is drawn but really you can do anything you want. 4 over 4 would look pretty plain but your idea would work. Ask the architect to show you side by side renderings?

@Mark Bischak, Architect, modern farmhouse must've not made it your way yet! Definitely not what you pictured (also, I can't tell what the grille design is on the lower half). Something like this style.

@PPF., do you have recommendations for (common) software to show different window styles? I've been hand pencil drawing them onto the plan :) Our contract with our architect is closed out, so would probably have to pay him more to do additional drawings.

I much prefer the style in nhb22’s rendering. Nothing wrong or unusual about that style of window in white.

It has to be a modern farmhouse, it has all the ingredients; 2/2 windows, board & batten siding (probably white at one time), metal roof, and exposed rafter tails. Is not that what defines a modern farmhouse??

Your windows are a mix of 6 over 1 and 4 over 1.

Note the individual pane sizes in the 2nd floor windows. The two smaller windows have almost square panes in the upper sash, while the larger windows have rectangular panes.

The 2 over 2 windows (what you are asking about) have better pane proportions as the individual panes shrink or expand as the window size changes, instead of adding or subtracting panes.

You can change yourself with most any image editing program. You 'white out' what you don't want and then draw in the changes. Here is an example from another thread where I changed a posted image -- my version on top.

There is no such thing as farmhouse style windows.

I would choose the 2 over 2 like nhb22 shows above.

And find a matching door.

Ah yes. I love that door! But my husband wants less glass for privacy so we were only going to do glass in the top 1/3. I'm trying to compromise in some places :) Thanks!

I prefer your choice to the other, which I associate with Craftsman style. Honestly, if you lean more toward the modern size of Modern Farmhouse, you could go without mullions at all.

Abbey L - I used the program PAINT. I could have been neater, but had to be someplace and worked on it quickly. Funny about the front door comment. I thought that was a screened door over the main door that was already a 2 over 2. :)

That door is another architect recommendation. We've picked a fir with 6 lites (3 over 3), but may adjust that if we switch the windows.

We have a white traditional looking farmhouse. We went with 2 over 2. I think it is a cleaner look. Less fussy. One thing I will point out- we went with between glass grids due to easier cleaning. What no one mentioned when I made that choice is that the grids are much more visible if you do grids on the outside. See how the grids kind of disappear in the evening? Live and learn. Maybe I still would choose between grids, but I feel like I didn’t have all the information I should have to make that decision.

My two cents…I think the colors used on the house and windows will push it more modern than the number of grids. But I like windows with grids

Many manufacturers make rather flimsy inserts. It's one reason I chose Pella 20 years ago. Any between-the-glass windows cost about a quarter as much as the true simulated we were required by the city to use on our front elevation. No one has *ever* noticed the difference. My window washer and I curse the building review committee members twice a year -- all hose tiny panes on the front of the house! (Not that washing four sides of the others is easy.)

@chisue, I'm all for easy cleaning! That's the next thing we have to decide...grilles/muntons!

@M R, interesting about the grilles disappearing at night. Do you have screens on the outside of your windows? I was wondering if screens somewhat kill the SDL or FDL look anyway and we should go with grilles between glass.

@M R, maybe! I asked our builder about it and he said you only have screens in 4 months a year. Not in my house...we don't change them in and out!

We have 6 over 1. I like your choice of 2 over 2. I would look at the simulated divided light “SDL” option those are the grids that show up and give the traditional work. They are a little tougher to clean but you dont clean windows every day. Plus your pattern would make it easy to clean. We have SDLs and our pattern is tougher to clean but not awful. We also did half screens so the SDLs show up even more.

Our neighbors have grids between the glass and the grids fade away at a distance.

Very helpful @K H! Surprisingly the full divided lights are only $500 more than SDLs so we were debating between that and inbetween grilles. We had the inbetween in our old house and honestly they didn't bother me, but now that I know too much it's a hard decision! In the meantime, I've been researching half screens this morning but worry with the 2 over 2 pattern it will look disjointed, but...still mulling. Thanks for sharing pics of your beautiful house!

That is surprising! I thought fully divided meant each lite was a separate piece of glass? Our SDLs also have a spacer bar between the glass. I guess each brand does it different. Anyway you chose your house will be beautiful!

Oh and here is a pic of screens pulled up and windows open on the garage. I don’t think full or half screens will detract from your grids.

A mullion is a heavy vertical or horizontal member between adjoining window units. Muntins are the narrow strips of wood that divide the individual panes of glass in a traditional sash window.

I have Anderson 400 Series 2 over one. True divided is the term. They are energy efficient.

Oops. Anderson calls their SDLs with a spacer added FDLs. So they aren't traditional FDLs.

@elcieg you have some beautiful windows!! Wish we had the budget to do something like that. I really wanted wood true divided lites but couldnt justify the expense to my husband. He grew up in an old farmhouse with original windows and just couldnt get his mind past the rotting wood frames, difficultly operating them and the draft. Even after explaining how superior windows built today are now. He said no way!

Traditional ? you mean true divided windows where each piece of glass was installed between wood muntins? I can't imagine you could even buy a window like that...maybe at a salvage shop. My experience is with Anderson 400 which offers is the look of true divided windows, are energy efficient, and avoids the snap in/snap out vinyl grids, that break and leave holes in the window frame.

K H, tell your husband to take a look...he needs an introduction to muntins in modern age.
