Modern-farmhouse and rustic styles seem like a match made in heaven. Both imbue a sense of authenticity with simple forms and raw materials like natural wood and stone. When combined, the blend offers a sense of place that feels harder to find these days: a quiet, bucolic retreat where time seems to slow down and offer a moment to focus on the simple things in life. Here, 15 rustic farmhouses show what these two styles have going for each other.

Owners of this 1916-built New England home surrounded by acres of wildlife refuge tackled the tough job of updating the old, confusing interior layout.
For one thing, the owners had to move the kitchen from a sun porch back to its original location. A 1930s-era refurbished Chambers range adds charm to the newly reworked space, while a custom sink, cabinetry, island and refectory-style table are also in keeping with the home’s era. The light fixture above the island uses vintage bulbs.
Previous owners had moved the kitchen into this sun porch, which sits behind the dining room. The porch got restored to its original use as a transitional space between indoors and out.
