Comments (33)We haven't gotten above freezing in the last week but today, tomorrow and Monday are going to be in the 40s so we're out trying to get everything in the yard winterized. It is a few weeks early for it to be this cold here but not all that unusual. I have been doing my potted roses on Thanksgiving weekend for the last few years. So this hard freeze is about 2 weeks a head of schedule. I have to admit that enormous lake effect snow storm was strange and uncommon. I think it would be for any year. I wish there was some way of shipping all that stored moisture to all our rose friends in the South West that need the water! Just fill up some refrigerated big rigs and head West!?...See MoreTHIRD Round of Polar Vortex Coming
Comments (19)The kids went to school here today. It was in the teens. Just got a message saying school is on a one hour delay tomorrow. Temps are supposed to drop below zero. It's 11 degrees right now. I had to work the past three days. Saturday was horrible, blizzard like conditions. I drive 25 miles to work. No snow plows out when I left early that morning. I couldn't see landmarks and was driving about 20 mph on the parkway. I ended up going off the wrong exit and had to turn around and get back on it. When I finally made it to the end of the parkway I knew I was going to be late for work and called to let them know. The house super asked how I managed to get where I was because she had gotten a bunch of call ins because the parkway had a truck turned over and it was closed. I must have just missed it. Tractor trailer and a salt truck. Not looking forward to going back this week. I have three more days to work and then I go on vacation. Hopefully the freezing cold weather will be gone soon. A homeless man froze to death in Lexington, I think last week. All the shelters are above capacity and people are going out in the city looking for people who are out in the cold. Not afraid to drive myself in snow but other people terrify me. They drive way to fast for the conditions....See MoreHow soon can you tell if the recent polar vortex damaged your trees?
Comments (14)you will start to see issues at bud break .. if any ... it can take months for dead buds to regenerate ... presuming the plant itself wasnt damaged .... you may also see lack of bloom on the early bloomers .. say redbud or such ... but then otherwise leaf out ok ... so what if you lose one year of flower ....if it lives.. it will bloom next year .... and then all thru summer ... if there was root damage ... in other words ... if the plant comes out of dormancy on stored energy.. but once thats used up.. it cant generate more energy thru sunshine .... think in tree/shrub time.. and dont give up in april ... it might take some time ... but by fall.. the next planting season after summer ... i might be replacing things that didnt please me.. by then ... ken ps: it ALWAYS helps to include your location.....See Moreflowersaremusic z5 Eastern WA
