The Polar Vortex
Comments (33)We haven't gotten above freezing in the last week but today, tomorrow and Monday are going to be in the 40s so we're out trying to get everything in the yard winterized. It is a few weeks early for it to be this cold here but not all that unusual. I have been doing my potted roses on Thanksgiving weekend for the last few years. So this hard freeze is about 2 weeks a head of schedule. I have to admit that enormous lake effect snow storm was strange and uncommon. I think it would be for any year. I wish there was some way of shipping all that stored moisture to all our rose friends in the South West that need the water! Just fill up some refrigerated big rigs and head West!?...See MoreTHIRD Round of Polar Vortex Coming
Comments (19)The kids went to school here today. It was in the teens. Just got a message saying school is on a one hour delay tomorrow. Temps are supposed to drop below zero. It's 11 degrees right now. I had to work the past three days. Saturday was horrible, blizzard like conditions. I drive 25 miles to work. No snow plows out when I left early that morning. I couldn't see landmarks and was driving about 20 mph on the parkway. I ended up going off the wrong exit and had to turn around and get back on it. When I finally made it to the end of the parkway I knew I was going to be late for work and called to let them know. The house super asked how I managed to get where I was because she had gotten a bunch of call ins because the parkway had a truck turned over and it was closed. I must have just missed it. Tractor trailer and a salt truck. Not looking forward to going back this week. I have three more days to work and then I go on vacation. Hopefully the freezing cold weather will be gone soon. A homeless man froze to death in Lexington, I think last week. All the shelters are above capacity and people are going out in the city looking for people who are out in the cold. Not afraid to drive myself in snow but other people terrify me. They drive way to fast for the conditions....See MoreSpring "Polar Vortex" :(
Comments (15)I think, to some degree, we all suffer from short-term memory failure :-) These cold temperatures feel abnormal, and they are to some degree, but - here at least - cool springs are not uncommon. 'cooler by the Lake' is desirable in the heat of the summer, but it's also a factor here in spring as it takes the Lake a long time to warm up. 1997 is fixed in my memory as a very cool spring - I stopped working the Friday before the May long weekend back in 1997. I spent a lot of the first week working in the garden at our previous house - wearing a ski-jacket because it was so cold! So, while I don't like cold springs, I have come to realize that it is always cold in May until (a) the jet-stream retreats north of Hudson's Bay and stays there and (b) there's been enough sunny days to warm the Lake up a bit! What has me worried this spring is that it has been very dry.... I have rain records going back to 2003 in the garden here. This April we had only 45mm. (1.77") of rain. That is close to the lowest April rain records I have for here. The average is 85mm, (3.3") We could use a good all-day rain here! I hope it doesn't mean we're in for a dry summer.......See MorePolar vortex, winter damage ID questions from spoiled zone 7 gardener
Comments (7)Thank you all for your advice and encouragement. Sub, I did see that comment, it was helpful! Sheila, my head knows it’s a waiting game, but my neurotic soul wants to know what I’m facing RIGHT NOW, ha! And also what to be looking for in the meantime because I can’t stop obsessing. Seil, letting me know you generally have to prune twice is crazy helpful. Thank you! I followed Ken and Ben’s advice on a thread about fort and clay soil when I first put them in. The graft isn’t deep, it’s right at the soil line. I did mound leaves and mulch around the base of the plants, which does go above the graft, but I didn’t completely cover them with blankets when the temperature dipped like Ken does. It honestly didn’t occur to me to do that even though we knew the day before the polar vortex was coming, I didn’t expect the temperatures to dip that low for so long. Shows my inexperience, I guess. I‘m glad to hear the own roots will most likely be okay! So what I’m hearing that I won’t definitively know at pruning time what’s damaged necessarily? Just take out what’s for sure and then kind of wait and see after that?...See More- 5 years ago
