Front Yard Landscaping-Need Help
The Blue Atlas Cedar was supposed to be a dwarf version & I am really hoping it stops growing. Even if it doesn’t, we will not cut it down, just trim it back if we have to.
The problem is the very front of the house. When we first moved in, we did some landscaping & we got a nasty winter & some of the shrubs split & got damaged from heavy snow. We then purchased some new things, that always look better starting out, then they grow too big, so we had to remove 2 shrubs.
I left that holly bush because it can possibly be transplanted or incorporated. I made up a mock pic for myself. My goal is to cover the front cement part of the porch, without growing taller than it, but it doesn’t have to be totally covered like a hedge as in my mock up.
I want something ever green in front, that won’t grow wildly fast & bushy or need a ton of shaping /maintenance. I think at the corner, I would consider an evergreen or non-evergreen that can grow a little wider and taller. Some annuals, perennials can be added, but only summer long lasting perennials that don’t look crappy once they die.
I am not good at picking out the right stuff & don’t have a ton of money. We are in NE PA.

4 years agoCould you return with the camera (it would be best if you took the photos when the light is better) and retake this picture...? Include slightly overlapping views to each side of it so we can see the whole, wide scene. Don't change camera locations between pictures or it will not work as a single scene. Just pivot the camera.

The house faces southeast I think (sun rises in front of the house but off to the left of center a bit...I am not great at figuring out directions but I that makes it southeast). It is in Montana. I know all these plants grow well here because they are all over my neighborhood in people's landscaping. I do not want evergreens and ground cover. I want something pretty. Comments (5)It's a fact ... you'll not be able to get rid of the mess until you create a permanent, hard walk where there is now mulch. The magnolia roots are going to make it harder, but it must be done if there is to be a cure. I agree with others that something like concrete (simplest and cheapest) or pavers/brick are suitable. A walk laid out to acknowledge the tree will look and work better than one that doesn't. The bench only makes sense if there is a way to get to it ... i.e., use it. But because of Magnolia roots, it would add a lot of difficulty extending the walk to the bench. Therefore, I'd recommend using the bench elsewhere and having only plantings at the front of the house. Ken_adrian - The thuja wasn't high up on the list to remove since it's doing okay. Need to remove the large tree beside it in the lower bed first since it's showing signs of age/disease. Haven't had a problem with the black mulch in the past year or so, but will keep that in mind. Can't take credit for the stone work, but thank you! I wanted to remove the railing so I don't have to use the stepping stones, however, it would leave the siding in need of patching, and it's 20 years old, so it wouldn't be easy to match. Ikayetwvz5 - thank you for those suggestions - I like the look of the dwarf hinoki cypress! Sorry that you didn't get much help. At this point, i'm just happy with getting some suggested plant names, so If i'm able to get a few suggestions from everyone, i'm good :) It's hard to make a decision.
