Hoping for helping in designing kid-friendly, family backyard
Comments (14)Thank you all for your help! Saturday night we went over to a friend's house and I love their yard. Very kid-friendly, but also areas for veggies and fruits. We had him come over and help us with some ideas too. Between the ideas we got on here and the help he gave us with the shape of the yard, etc. we finally have a plan we like and can start implementing in stages. We are going to have the kids area (sandbox & playhouse) up by the house. That is the only area that gets any shade, and with these 100 degree days, well we need a shaded area for the boys to play in. We will move all the berries to the far east end of the yard, all together. We will build another planter box along that side for them. That will put the yellowjackets far away! He helped draw out a yard shape, kind of looks like a golf course green, and I like it. It will still leave most of the area lawn, which we wanted for as the kids grow so they can have space to run. But what it will help with is drawing everything together, making it look less fragmented. We now are just trying to decide what to use for the border between grass and the other areas: concrete curbing, pavers, etc. Thank you so much for all of your input. Thank you saypoint for the drawing you took the time to make. I would still love to see some pictures of other people's backyards, so if anyone has any, please post a link. I'm very visual. I do much better to say, do it like this person did, instead of creating my own ideas!...See MoreNeed allergy friendly wood stove!
Comments (7)Fivelinks: I don`t know if you are aware that when loading a wood stove or insert it is always best to wait until only hot coals are left, and then to open the door slightly for about 20 seconds to get the draught going up the chimney instead of spilling into the room. If this doesn`t quite work, then crack open a window first, then you will most certainly have no spillage into the room. I have been burning wood for 35 years and no smoke in our house, but dust, yes. Solution, place an air-purifer, or maybe 2 of them in the same room as the stove. There is no reason that you cant make wood-heat work for you. Look at Hearth.com for help. Be aware that once you purchase a new EPA certified product, that just like anything else you use for the first time, there will be trial and error. But if you would rather spend 1k instead of 3k and be "Carbon Neutral" doing it, then go for it. Maybe too late for this year, because you should always burn nothing but well seasoned wood. And that is hard to come by in Dec....See MoreFinal[ish] Draft of Lotsa Helping Hands Family-Friendly Cookbook
Comments (14)OK, here's a quick and easy dessert that's still a good old fashioned comfort food and relative nutritious as desserts go. (grin) Blueberry Crisp-GrandmaÂs ================ 3 cups blueberries, fresh or frozen, unsweetened 2 tbls lemon juice 2/3 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup flour 1/2 cup quick oats 1/3 cup butter, softened 3/4 tsp cinnamon 1/4 tsp salt . Heat oven to 375. Arrange berries in ungreased square baking dish (8 inch) and sprinkle with lemon juice. Combine remaining ingredients until crumbly. (I use a pastry blender, grandma used two knives). Crumble topping over berries and bake until topping is lightly browned and berries are hot, about 30 minutes. Makes 4-6 servings. I double this and it still comes out good. Plus blueberries are low in calories, have lots of fiber and no fat, contain antioxidants C, E and beta carotene and have been found to be as helpful in urinary tract health as cranberries. That's why I need ice cream with them, they are just too darned healthy. LOL Blueenough, it's clear that your daughter was a wonderful person and well loved by her family and community. It's always too soon to lose a child, a mother, a wife, and so I'm sending my prayers for strenth and healing to you all. And some blueberry crisp, compliments of my own beloved late Grandmother, Delphia Powell, who left me with my love of cooking and a lot of great recipes. Thanks, Grandma. Comments (13)If you are going to give this a title then show a room that would actually be family friendly. We 3 very rowdy boys but they did not take over the house they had rooms to play in when they were a bit older and as toddlers my Dad built the most amazing toy box/ bench the kids played in the LR until supper time then this bench had 3 boxes on wheels under it the kids pulled the boxes out loaded up all the toys and put them back. I have to say I hate going into a home for a nice dinner party of adults and the whole space is full of toys. Kids need to learn to clean up after themselves from the start. As for furniture IMO nothing beats good leather to withstand all kinds od things. MY MIL used to say our house looked like no one lived there I am sure it was not meant as a compliment but I would always say thank you, I am a minimalist and that will never change. I love tthat kids can now be heard but they still do not have to take over the house. All these huge plastic slides, kitchens belong in a bedroom and not bought until they are old enough to play in their room . If you have a play room I agree it needs to be close to the family and at the end of the day all the stuff gets put back where it belongs.Kids do not need every toy they own out and we used put 1/2 the BD or Christmas presents away and exchange during the year for the ones they had been having out it worked really well....See MoreAlexandria Hernandez
