Showy partial sun annual for flower boxes
Comments (18)Single-variety planters take just as much watering and grooming as fancy planters. If you want to mix plants, go for it. If you prefer the look of all-one-variety, then do that instead. You're the one who will see it daily. You can certainly put together something fabulous from catalogs, but for your first combo, go easy on yourself. I recommend you go to a friendly nursery where they will let you play around a bit. Take one of your favorite plants on a tour of the nursery and put it next to anything else you like the look of. Pick out some friends for your favorite. Check labels and ask the staff, if necessary, to make sure all your choices need the same amount of light, food and water. Take a few of each plant that you like, and keeping them in their pots, place them on the counter, floor, little red wagon, etc. so you can see how they look together. Stand back and see how it looks. Try a few different arrangements. Make sure you buy enough plants to make your containers look full from the start. Have fun! Oh, and at this point, you may be able to score some discounted or free plants to fill in what you have this year. Many nurseries do clearance sales this time of year. The plants may look sad, but they often bounce back after a couple of weeks of TLC. I picked up some free annuals today, from a nursery that wanted to get rid of them. They posted on Freecycle. I love Freecycle. Here is a link that might be useful: Freecycle...See MoreSun or shade or partial sun where to plant
Comments (10)Beachplant and Barbara, thanks for the info. Knowledge overcomes effort. I guess some might not make it. That is ok, I just want to give them a fighting chance. I am not sure what type they are but their name is Hemerocallis fulva, believe from doing a little reading they are evergreen. The Hybrids are Hemerocallis. roadsde daylillies Hybrids At least I know who can take the sun. It is a killer if you get it wrong. I would not want to be out in it all day. Forsythia and Butterfly bush are so pretty, maybe they will make it. I live back from the water now about 2 1/2 miles. I just went on a buying spree with cheap prices. I have purchase from this wholesaler before and everthing is growing very well. The wind is doing a number on my plants. I hope they adapt. We had a freeze line come within 200 yards of my house. How weird is that. My house was ok but driving to work as I went downhill on my street about 200 yards. There was frost over entire acres of yards. It did not even nip a single plant. Thank you lord. I am getting ready to plant 50 lbs of Bahia Grass for the sheep. I ran irrigation last Sunday and will put sprinkler heads on this weekend. Poor fellers, they are upset I swiped a 100 x 100 area from them. They are pretty smart. They would graze certain areas at certain time of the day and select what they wanted. Kind of like a buffet. They were managing their food source. Another nice acre of Bahia will make them happy. Thanks for the info. I do need all the help I can get. Remember I just startd back into gardening last November. I have gone from no plants to who knows how many. The eater and all of my other exotic/invasive roses received a special place, tree and fence line to grow on. I am growing Fortuniana rose for rootstock. Jim...See MoreRising Sun Redbud pruning question
Comments (25)"The absolute only time I propagate patented plants without permission is if I am keeping them to myself." Isn't that similar to, "The only time I steal food from the convenient store is when I'm hungry and plan to eat it myself." Logan, I don't personally care when you propagate patented plants, but you don't seem to understand how the plant patent thing works. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I disagree with many of the contributors to this thread about redbud's ability to straighten themselves out. I have hundreds of redbuds on my farm and have dealt with a number of them in people's landscape. Redbuds VERY FREQUENTLY suffer from damage and breakage due to their poorly formed branch crotch angles. Cercis canadensis is a relatively short-lived species of tree, and, IMO, a contributing factor is its poor branching and growth habit. Ken suggested the possibility of staking the longest/largest branch and I think that is what I would likely do. There's no need to prune off the other branch, at this point. The one staked upright will become the leader and the other branch will naturally slow down. If it's still a problem in a year or so, then you can take action. Right now each of the two branches appear to contain at least one-third, if not more, of the tree's total foliage....See MoreNeed Help: Rising Sun Redbud Tree
Comments (18)I've noticed that if there is a late freeze after they have budded out the leaves will just stop growing and stay whatever size they were when the cold hit. It took a good month of warmer temperatures for mine to start adding size to the leaves again. This happened to my largest, most exposed tree while the more protected ones didn't skip a beat. It was a little strange and did give me pause, but it's since recovered and has nice larger leaves now....See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
