Report: Toasting in Cheap Toaster Oven
Comments (4)I also look for a toaster oven for toasting, rather than ovening. The Black and Deckers we've had did a decent job toasting, but the flimsy aspect got to me after awhile. The use of a big family will take its toll. So when we moved into our new house, I splurged on a Krups. Even though it also does the convection ovening I wasn't looking for, it had good reviews and looked like the Hummer of toaster ovens...black, boxy, and tough. At first it did a magnificent job toasting, top and bottom. Now, not so much and I'm not sure why. The elements seem to be working. Sometimes we get it all set, hit the 'start' button and it clears out and stops instead. This is where the ovening can now come in handy, because we sometimes resort to crisping things using that feature instead of toasting! Yep, Gary...Another oven problem! I do realize that the operator is the common denominator here. ;-) Plllog, I'm glad you're happy with the B&D. $25 is a great price! I could see replacing 'flimsy' every year or two for that price....See MoreBreville toaster oven flaws?
Comments (45)I agree with all the comments about ease of cleaning. Our first toaster had to be replaced which was also breville. The magnets got so caked with grease that it didn't close properly. These were not spills but residue from grease circulating because it was in vapor form. Also the metal rack wouldn't pull out anymore. So after getting a new one and having for about a year I tried to use oven off. Bad idea! Don't use oven off cleaner! It turned my oven black and I cannot get it off. I believe it ate the finish off. This is a major flaw because the grease is released all over the oven (especially in convection mode) and leaves a grease residue on the door and where it escapes through the top of the door. Without being able to clean these surfaces completely there is no way you can make this oven last longer than 3-5 years tops. I will not be buying again and I am very disappointed (we use it everyday and like it other than that.). If anyone has a different brand in mind, one that can withstand easy off I would be curious to know. Thank you for sharing all your comments they are very helpful....See MoreShow me where you keep your toaster ovens, please
Comments (11)My ideal kitchen would have located adjacent to the refrigerator: 1) a Breville size small smart toaster oven in a backplash-tiled cubbyhole in the low part of upper cabinets -----sized with enough inches of clearance so that the thermal properties of the cubbyhole are not a fire hazard -----backsplash-tiled to make it beautiful and look intentional 2) a Sharp microwave drawer under that toaster I'd bet a time-motion analysis would show those 3 appliances are used the most often when making something to eat in my house. Ex: My go-to weekly meal of broccoli and salmon with tzatziki involves - roasting a full bag of that pre-cut broccoli florets onto the Breville oven tray (yes, a small B oven fits 1 bag exactly) with minced garlic and a squeeze of lemon - browning salmon fillets in a cast iron skillet. Then finishing them in the Breville for 10-12 min. A small could hold 4, maybe 5. Part of any meal is almost always re-heated in the microwave or small Breville, whether its from making a big batch of roasted veggies in the big oven (i'm on a brussel sprout kick since figuring out how to remove the bitter part) or gently heating up leftover main courses in the micro (re-heating up meats turns out so much better for me when I do it slowly in the micro at 30% power and heat only till they are no more than 115 on the outside surface ....See MoreDo you love your toaster oven?
Comments (51)I'm seriously considering buying the red Breville TO until I read the exterior heats up. Just how hot do they get on the outside? I think they'd make cooking a bit more fun. Ironically, when we remodeled the kitchen and made it much larger, I lost my drive to cook. Thankfully my dh doesn't mind helping out. Isn't there another thread here about the Oster oven? It seems to have fantastic reviews but at a lower price. But I like the red since it matches my kitchen. :)...See Moreritaweeda
