I've always been very interested in real life crime (was a double major, but it became a minor, in criminal justice administration (with my pre-law focus)). I can only guess that I was interested in the Zodiac the most, because I lived through it. I was on that side of the country, in that area, at that time. When he talked about kids coming off the bus. I once read a book where they narrow down who they thought it was, but they also surmised that he probably was already dead. Thank you for putting me on to this podcast. I always enjoy Connelly’s works because he seems to put more effort into research as well as keeping things authentic to the era, locations, etc. I also find it interesting that others reach different conclusions, often for financial gains, which in my mind, leads me to be a little suspect sometimes of their results. Of course some financial exchange also takes place that doesn’t drive the conclusion, for example paying someone for their expertise or help with analysis.

For those listening to the first batch of 10, as is recommended, don't become impatient because of the repetition or the feeling that they "squeezed" 5 episodes of content into 10 episodes. I found the tale to be interesting all the same and worth listening to. And that will bring you to the newest updating episodes, 11 and 12, which are tighter and evolve the story.

Connelly has the honesty, ethics, adherance to truth and dogged pursuit of same as did old fashioned, establishment journalists. (Yes, of course that did exist and continues to in small pockets). If that skeptical but curious character is convinced about the findings, that means something.

I'm not quite sure what you have in mind so I'll share a thought not to you but to others who may wonder why he got involved.

Connelly has personally underwritten the cost of engaging recognized experts to conduct their own subject-matter limited assessments, consider all the findings to-date and to poke holes in the work of the amateur cold-case sleuth who started the whole matter and others. The experts have been paid for their time and findings, not as shills to shout "Hallelujah" when prompted. Connelly has said that he wants the truth to be unearthed and it is not a commercial venture for him. Heavens knows he's not hurting for cash.

Connelly wrote a comment for Bosch to say in one of the early novels about cold cases. Bosch said " A city that forgets its victims isn't a city anymore. It's a place that's lost." The LAPD open/unsolved department apparently had a sign made with that saying on it and hung it prominently on the wall. I think it is in that spirit that Connelly, as an ex-LA Times reporter on the cop beat and a person who has invested his life in the subject area, is pursuing it.

Yes indeed, Lindsey. Brilliant authorship and character creation. I think he slips that sentence into every book (and TV production).

Excellent podcast. I got a bit bogged down in the code breaking, but the rest was really interesting. I've checked out from the library the book Black Dahlia by William Mann, whom he interviewed.

I listened to #13, and he said there would be another episode soon. It's not over yet!

I lived in San Francisco from '73 to '84 so I was aware of the Zodiac Killer. I don't remember being worried or concerned about it.

Elmer, unless you were by rob's side for every moment of her life, you could not possibly know and therefore have to accept that what she says is her truth. You don't have to like it but you can't simply decide it isn't true.

I spent 11 years in San Francisco (age 22 to 33) and it was so much fun. Living with friends, meeting people from all walks of life, so many wonderful experiences, the fantastic music from the actual musicians in great venues, so many wonderful places to explore. I feel so lucky to have had that experience.

I'm sure the podcast is worth hearing. I remember watching a televised series about all the different suspects. After reading a book about this particular serial killer (who has obviously been very meaningful in my life), and many of the suspects, made a lot of sense. I think I ended on the same note they ended on, he's very likely dead, since that's just about the only reason that would stop him. I think that part alone is very interesting. Do you think most of them stop because they're close to being caught? Dead? Or some other reason? I'm not sure we know that answer.

Further to aok's comment above, there's now a page on the Killer in the Code website labeled as "Chapter 14". (Same as saying Episode 14).
