2 different woods, same floor, old house

My father-in-law recently purchased a house he had been renting. After removing the carpet (there since before begining to rent) he discovered that the center (8*10) of two downstairs rooms had larger, unstained boards within a thinner, stained portion. It looks as if the thinner boards were stained while the thicker, unstained boards were in place, or the stain bled? The setup looks purposeful.
Any thoughts why these wooden floors would have been setup this way?
