Flooring Design Dilemma

What’s the design rule of having 2 different wood tone flooring?

We have dark wood flooring in the main living rooms of our home. We want to replace the carpet in the bedrooms but want something lighter, but the current dark wood meets the doorways to the rooms. Is is okay to have a lighter wood look in the bedrooms or is that a design “no-no”?

It would be best to match the existing wood, or at least pick woods with the same tones.

since they are bedrooms, you can get away w/something diff.

would you at least be doing the same species? or size?

I mean, I redid the wood floor in my bedroom. wanted herringbone floors. at the time, the pre milled herringbone was really only avail in Acacia. Which is fine. and I had Acacia in the hallway, although it was just regular planks. 4 years later, guess what? decided to redo the floors everywhere else in the house. didn't want acacia. So I did a French Oak. The master sits back from the hallway so no one can even see it.

Can you show us a pic of the current hardwood and how it relates to the bedrooms?

I am planning to do creamy yellow walls (Ben Moore Cream Yellow) with white baseboards and doors. I am hoping for a light granite with character, veigns, splotchy etc to hide messes. I have three kids and am open to granite suggestions. As far as the floor it will be tile throughout the great room. Most likely porcelain in a mix of beigey colors to hide messes again. The applainces are SS, I am debating between the GE Cafe line or Profile line (dh prefers the look of the profile with the black accents and archs). We will slowly start buying new furniture for the house but nothing has been decided we like simple pottery barn type stuff.

Hmm. I'd sleep on it. See what bugs you more/draws you more. Go with your intuition. Put it in different spots. Look at it in different lights-morning, day, artificial lighting. Stop looking at them for several hours-and then look some more. Not easy I know. I choose my current flooring for a week minimum..gosh I was so silly I even took it next to my face and looked at both of us-me and floor sample lol-in the mirror..to see whether it flatters my complexion)) In the end I chose well, I love it. I'd say I love it madly. But to tell you the truth-if I picked something else, I'd probably like it too..) Because most of all I loved some flooring that we ordered-and were told it was discontinued. I had to choose again. I was so upset! Fast forward six years-I don't even remember what that first love of mine was..

I forgot to mention I also have three different countertop materials. This run is vintage cabinets with Shaker doors, black marble (Karin, GW stone expert says it's limestone): Uppers and sink cab in this pic are from the old kitchen. New drawers have slab fronts, and trash pull-out door (to the left of the DW) is a new door. Recycled epoxy resin lab table tops: Old uppers, new slab drawers, new doors above fridge: The drawer fronts and cabinet doors to left of fridge are re-used from old kitchen, added to new boxes. Personal opinion. If you look at the kitchens deco posted i think they look nice enough but would both have been even better with the same counters, i dont think the different perimeters add anything (except some visual chaos) in either case. Agree. One other thought. If I hadn't found my busy and exciting quartzite, i would have picked a very quiet stone or a plain quartz, paper stone, etc and then done an interesting backsplash with color.

The hardwood laminate is in the upstairs hallway and game room and the bedrooms have the original builders carpet that is way overdue of being replaced. My husband wants to do another wood look but lighter and I’m just not sure about it since it transitions from the hallway into bedrooms. I’m leaning towards tile in the bedrooms.

Or should I just use the same product in the bedrooms that is in the hallway?

It would be better if it were continuous. To make the transition to the lighter wood you could border it with the dark wood.

ok, so it's laminate. you didn't mention that fact.

do you want to do another laminate in the bedroom? I'm sure you can find something similar that matches, but in a lighter shade. do a transition piece and you'll be fine.

I always ask: How old is the laminate that you already have? Is it 3 years old or is it 13 years old? If it is still quite young, go ahead and put in a colour you want in the bedrooms and wait until BOTH laminates give up the ghost to get all the floors the same in the upstairs.

If the laminate is a few years away from being replaced, then I suggest you hold off finding another laminate just yet. If your laminate will only give you another 5 years (or so) then you will want to do one of two things:

1. Replace carpet with carpet and wait a few more years before you swap out ALL the floors for a single product.

2. Purchase ENOUGH new laminate to replace ALL the flooring upstairs in the new laminate. You can wait to pull the old laminate for another day...because you purchased all of the floor at the same time.

Be aware that man-made products suck as laminate (vinyl, factory finished hardwoods, tiles, etc) have a 'shelf-life' of 18 - 24 months. After that they are gonezo alonzo. Never to be found again. That's why you purchase everything all at once.

Plan ahead. Look into your '7 year renovation time line'. Look to see what else will need to be done in that time frame. If the old laminate is going to be swapped out, then PLAN for that. You never want to find yourself in the IDENTICAL situation 3 years from now...only to realize a little bit of thought could have saved you THOUSANDS of dollars.
