How to remove etching from engineered stone?

I've managed to etch or somehow damage our engineered stone counter top with CLR. Is there any way to remove or repair the damage?

jlearie CLR contains Lactic Acid 79-33-4 18% 2. Gluconic Acid 526-95-4 3.75% 3. Lauramine Oxide and is also a pH of 2. Which is the same as hydrochloric acid.

All highly corrosive.... also be aware thar BKF is also this pH. All do damage to the stone.

Whilst I do agree with the above statement about Quartz Renew, but it is only ever a blend of the polished surface. All the stone restoration guys that we know have the same issue with the Quartz Renew. It is only ever 90% of the reflectivity achieved, this means that the stone finish or polish in never the same as the factory finish.

We are able to return the surface to the original factory finish for all Quartz brands, color and finishes. Including the highly polished pure white and marble look range.

We are master stonemason not just a general contractor and have restored some of the most prestigious projects around the world. So we do know what we are talking about.

Also we are one of a hand full of companies able to restore quartz stone or engineered stone back to the original factory finish. Just to give you some quantification to our advise.

Whilst Quartz Renew is an ok solution, but it is far from perfect. It will only restore the stone to about 10% within the original shine or polish if you measure it with a gloss meter. It will NOT restore the high polished shine on marble look or fine grain quartz stone. As these are finished at about twice the gloss level.

Yes measuring via a gloss meter is the same as viewing the surface from various angles to see the polish. If you do this ona Quartz Renew repaired surface you WILL SEE the slight haze where it has been used. Though it is better than leaving the surface as it was.

The best option is Diamond Quartz Polish in the DIY-Trade kit. It returns the shine and gloss to any Quartz of any brand, colour and finish. It is a permanent solution as it nano activates the components the quartz is made of to achieve the polish and shine. The same as the factory finish. There is no hazing or shadow around the repair like quartz renew.

It is best to AVOID using any of the following - the current big item causing etching damage is BLEACH or anything containing bleach. It is known to etch stone.

Which will damage the stone and most likely have cause the issue to start with.

4) Drain Cleaner
5) Gumption
6) Magic Erasers

9) or any other abrasive or corrosive cleaners

For example you can enter any product into google followed by MSDS to bring us the Material Safety Data Sheet. Where in section 3 all hazardous chemicals must be list by law. Along with the pH of the product in section 9.
The optimum pH range for any surface and not to be caustic or acidic is pH6-8. This way no surface can be damaged from any cleaning product.

Dang it, I hate it when I have to disagree with lwo, but she's wrong. I've removed etching from engineered stone. It's not a DIY project because you should have some scrap to practice on before you attempt the real thing.

Your stone professional should use Quartz Renew. And expect to sign a waiver that the top is ruined and that the restoration professional can only make it better.

Oh no! I removed the bolts I could see that were holding the engine down from above--couldn't see the crank shaft bolt and so that got left out. . . . The engine is B&S 191707-5852-01. Electric start. Thanks everyone for the advice. It's my understanding that it's not too late. Really need to get hold of an impact wrench (I'll see if any neighbors have one). Since the engine is very, very likely toast anyway, I guess I don't have to worry so much about bracing the (frozen) flywheel. Does this sound reasonable? (I'm a nurse on a subsistence farm with some wrenches and no way to just load up the whole mower to transport it to be worked on by the folks who know what they're doing. In the past, it's been transported to a different outfit for work several times--weeks and much money later, they never actually fixed the problem. I did a little research and was finally able to fix that problem myself. That's how I came to be trying to remove the engine myself. . . . So, thank you all for your patience!!)

my3apples, I've honed a carrara top using the powder, made into a paste. Now when I want to remove an etch, I use a sanding sponge--an old one that has most of the 'grit' worn off, with a bit of water. Make sure you start with a high grit sponge, or better yet, get two, and rub them together until they are fairly smooth. ***Warning, first use this method on a sample piece, or in an out-of-the-way area.*** My top has a slight, hand-polished sheen, so I rub until it blends. In my experience, the longer the sanding time, the higher the sheen. I've also wet-sanded with 600 grit paper. Again, try it on a sample first. Now, if anyone has a hint about how to get rid of star dings, please let me know. My younger daughter (24yrs old) was playing with three of those hematite-type chatter magnets, and dropped them on the island counter. The marks look just like Orion's belt. Kids :[

How do you remove a rusted mailbox from a stone & concrete pillar

Most times they are cemented in when the pillar was built. You may be able to remove cement from around the box and pull/cut/tear/ or whatever you need to do to remove it. There should be motar on all sides of the mailbox, possibly only at the front edge. Then you install the new box and re-motar it. Its hard to say without seeing the acutal installation.

You might consider etching the whole thing and even it out. Call it "weathered". Depends on how the etched bit looks, of course!

I have marmiline newly installed in my shower and during install it was scratched. I am trying to repair and so far no one has heard of it, knows what it is made of, and how to fix. I actually contacted the company in Canada and they do not have an answer. They kept referring me to a restoration specialist. When I contact them, they ask what it is made of. I feel like and know I am going in circles. Has anyone ever dealt with Marmiline and repaired it?

That is cultured marble. Once the gel coat is scratched, you cannot really "repair" it. You can disguise it with a clear fill of cyanoacrylate (super glue).

The company Anatolia stated that the Restoration Specialist can fix it by someone polishing. I ask what it was made of and all they said is it is like marble. I have completed the install of everything, and I don't want to tear it out. I had a person use a polisher and use the different grit paper like you would if doing other products and it just added more scratches. The scratches are not into the grain, they are surface scratches. If you use the impregnated sealant will this help at all. Mine is the dark grey color shadow and I've been told the darker the color the harder it is to mask issues. Thank you for additional info.

It will make a smeary mess is what a sealer will do. Using abrasives on that has permanently scratched the protective gel coat. It is not repairable. It is live with it or replace it.

My husband was able to sand the Marmiline and remove the scratches. It looks great. Now we need to add back the get coat. Can you recommend one that will resotre the look.

I have Marmiline as my shower sill and it has scratches. The company told me to treat it like granite. One refinisher said the shadow color is too hard to get scratches out and you can ruin the color and another said it is easy. I am not sure what to do or what to believe at this point

Hi Kim I also have marmilline in the shadow color in my bathroom and have scratches. Could you let me know how you got the scratches out? I have had one refinisher say it can be done and another say it cannot. thanks

It's engineered stone and the finish can be restored with a Quartz Renew kit, however, replacement may be more cost effective.
