why won't my grass grow?
Comments (5)Most all grasses grow best with a soil pH between 6.2 and 6.8. If you have your own pH meter how well that will work and whether it will really give a good reading depends on many things, but mostly those are not very reliable. Organic "fertilizers" can give the same results as the synthetic fertilizers but what you want to do is make the soil into a good and healthy soil that will grow strong and healthy plants without the need for "fertilziers". Contact your county office of the North Carolina state University USDA Cooperative Extension Service about having a good, reliable soil test done so you know what your soils pH is and what the base nutrient load is and then dig in with these simple soil tests, 1) Structure. From that soil sample put enough of the rest to make a 4 inch level in a clear 1 quart jar, with a tight fitting lid. Fill that jar with water and replace the lid, tightly. Shake the jar vigorously and then let it stand for 24 hours. Your soil will settle out according to soil particle size and weight. A good loam will have about 1-3/4 inch (about 45%) of sand on the bottom. about 1 inch (about 25%) of silt next, about 1 inch (25%) of clay above that, and about 1/4 inch (about 5%) of organic matter on the top. 2) Drainage. Dig a hole 1 foot square and 1 foot deep and fill that with water. After that water drains away refill the hole with more water and time how long it takes that to drain away. Anything less than 2 hours and your soil drains too quickly and needs more organic matter to slow that drainage down. Anything over 6 hours and the soil drains too slowly and needs lots of organic matter to speed it up. 3) Tilth. Take a handful of your slightly damp soil and squeeze it tightly. When the pressure is released the soil should hold together in that clump, but when poked with a finger that clump should fall apart. 4) Smell. What does your soil smell like? A pleasant, rich earthy odor? Putrid, offensive, repugnant odor? The more organic matter in your soil the more active the soil bacteria will be and the nicer you soil will smell. 5) Life. How many earthworms per shovel full were there? 5 or more indicates a pretty healthy soil. Fewer than 5, according to the Natural Resources Conservation Service, indicates a soil that is not healthy. to see what else needs be done with your soil to make it into that good, healthy soil that will grow strong and healthy plants. Comments (7)Alex, The pressure chamber has been the cause twice for a similar problem as described here: http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/appl/msg0413510827197.html Although the symptoms are much the same, there are differences not present this time: - the special sound stemming from the lack of water in the sump - the ability to help the dishwasher finishing the cycle by throwing 2-3 litres of water into it Also, it does actually finish the cycle after 7-8 hours. I am pretty sure the pressure chamber or heat exchanger isn't the cause this time. But I could check if you think it could be the cause even though the symptoms are different. But what about the power consumption of the heater. At 900 mA at 230 V it consumes only around 100W. Even if the pressure chamber or heat exchanger was clogged, it would consume the same power, wouldn't it? I guest there is only a on/off function of the heater. If not the heater itself, I am wondering if there could be a bad connection somewhere etc. By all means correct me if I am wrong in my assumptions about how it works!...See MoreWhose problem is it if dishwasher won't fit after remodel?
Comments (14)OK, now you are starting to talk about issues that involve safety. There's enough red flags here that I'd want someone who has some basic knowledge to come in and do an inspection to see what else you might be missing. Do you have a family friend or relative that can do that for you? If not, then you may want to see about paying another contractor to come in and assess the issues. I wouldn't approach the codes office until you have a good idea of exactly what needs to be addressed as far as redo's. Electrical is a big one though. Because different locations have different responses to projects done without permitting. You need that type of information in hand before you think of talking with the codes office. And the answer to "who pays for the errors" involves your contract and how it's worded, and if any of those words mention "industry standards" "code standards" or manufacturer installation requirements". And it's also a can of worms as to whether or not the contractor is above board enough to be able to hold to a contract, or if he'll just fold, declare bankruptcy and leave you holding the bag. Either way, hold on to the money you owe him, because that's your only leverage at this point. If the list of things he's done wrong starts to mount up, I'd personally want him to remove the stone (at his own risk of replacement) uninstall the cabinets, (at his own risk of replacement) and address the electrical issues, whatever plumbing issues might be found, then put down ply and re-install the cabinets correctly. If he's an above board guy though, he would have already offered to do that. In a situation where you're dealing with a hack, all bets are off as to how to get him to do anything but put a lien on your home if you don't pay him. That's where it's gonna be important to have your ducks in a row, and it's why it's important to work with him to solve the issues that exist first. But, you first have to know how many issues there are....See MoreWhy my next washer won't be a High Efficiency
Comments (33)Josephine, my Maytag (Bravo X, 700XL2) knows what to do with wet clothes. I use the rinse and spin cycle on DH's jeans most weeks, he can really get muddy. When that cycle is over (20 min) and the rinse water has spun out, I wash them using the 'bulky' setting with deeper water or it may not get residual mud from the inside of the pants legs bottoms. I would not put partially washed clothes dirty into my dryer to only have to clean the dryer. I freely admit he can get much dirtier than average laundry. (I've insisted he stand in the garage and strip more than once. No sympathy from me when he tells me he's worked all day and he's tired, he is not coming inside like that ;)) He's hiking off trail 4 days a week for his work in all kinds of weather through all kinds of terrain. Going through beaver ponds and falling off logs. My issue isn't dirty clothes not coming clean like I said above, it's only the amount of time laundry takes. We were at his sisters weekend house a while back and I put a load of towels in the older Maytag there, got to listen to the familiar sounds of laundry, big grin on my face. And 25 minutes later I was putting the washed things into the dryer, it was the first time laundry has been fun in a few years....See MoreHannah
