Do you think this backsplash is going to be too busy?
Comments (33)Like holligator, I think that two "busy" surfaces tend to compete with each other for your attention, and they tend to cancel each other out. I always thought of the backsplash as a "bridge" between the upper cabinets and the counter top and lower cabinets. My backsplash is similar to sue b's. I used a row of 4 x 4 inch field tiles, with three rows of 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch mosaic, then 3 x 6 inch subway tiles the rest of the way. I wanted something different above the range, and that led me to the final design, which incorporates the mosaic tile. I was initially not happy with the grout lines I ended up with, but I think it makes the kitchen look more "old fashioned", which was the look I was going for. While my backsplash seems to work in my kitchen, I don't think it would look good in a more modern kitchen. I really like your granite, and if you want it to be the focal point of your kitchen, a more neutral backsplash will certainly bring it to the forefront. You're certainly not alone in changing your mind about your vision for your kitchen. I can't tell you how many times I changed my mind about nearly every element of my kitchen. The way my kitchen turned out looks nothing like my original vision. I found the backsplash to absolutely be the most agonizing decision of all! Comments (36)Monochromatic means one color. I'd say this actually is monochromatic or close to it--all the same color family. The issue isn't that it is too colorful. The issue is whether it is too busy. That relates to pattern, which I think people often discuss in terms of whether something is too "busy." It is too busy for my taste. If the OPer had said in her first post, I love my new tile, I wouldn't say anything. But since she asked, I do think it is too busy. And I don't think the sunk cost is a reason not to change it. I think it can be changed with not much additional cost by simply pulling down the tile and painting a neutral color pulled from the countertop, or really even a different color which would be a way to introduce color without pattern. And a recent, favorite, not-at-all monochromatic kitchen reveal here that comes immediately to mind is Carrieb's....See MoreIs this too busy?
Comments (53)Yellowing is only an issue with white epoxy, correct? Other epoxy colors won't become discolored over time, right? That Laticrete translucent grout is their Plasma product and I have heard too many horror stories about that product. Besides, this is a steam shower so I will be using epoxy grout, urethane type grouts like Plasma aren't recommended for steam showers. A solid surface bench would look cool but I think lucite would have issues. The biggest would be finding one to perfectly match the color of the tile. Another is that it might look weird because the glass tile is backpainted whereas colored lucite (at least all the ones I've seen) has through-body color so I don't know how that would look paired with glass. I think the reason we used mosaic on the bench instead of the subway is because mosaic gives your butt more traction and is less slippery. Same reason large glass tile on the floor is dangerous. From an aesthetic standpoint I would have preferred not to use the mosaic tile anywhere. The white grout on the floor is Fusion Pro so hopefully that will never discolor. Someone please tell me it will never discolor! ;-) The missing red tile is where the control for the steam shower goes. We needed to leave an opening for the control wire....See MorePlease help kitchen dilemma! is this much too busy?
Comments (8)Thank you all so much for chiming in. The space is going to be flooded with light and by a pool which I feel needs to be taken into consideration ;would not consider this combo in my house!) I think that may offer some forgiveness per Silverlined. With that being said the busyness of both may still be fighting each other too much. Wish I didn’t love both the floor and countertop!! Again considering location and the uniqueness of this beautiful quartzite slab the floors may have to go. Found out today it’s not going to cost nearly as much as I thought to return floors so now I have a few days to find a possible alternative. Definitely want to stick with a limestone/travertine look instead of wood. Again per location/pool deck and for something different! Also because it’s a small space of 475 sq fat. I’m not set on this backsplash at all but know it will have to be something quiet! Thanks again for input and any other ideas it’s appreciated!...See MoreAngel 18432
