Design Dilemma Paint Kitchens

Need a little help with cabinet color to disguise countertop

We are updating our attached guess house, but our budget limit what we are able to do this time. I’m looking for a color and the cabinets, that would downplay the pattern/tones on the granite. The last picture is a pretty good representation of the actual color.

I wouldn’t spend the 7/9K to have guest house cabinets painted. It’s fine, as is. The bigger visible sin is the white refrigerator and poor lighting. Spend your 10K on that.

Thanks for the recommendation 😊..... We are painting ourselves.... unfortunately we don’t have a 10k budget... specially with all that’s going on now🥴🥴🥴. But definitely changing the refrigerator.

I am having a lot of anxiety over this area and am really hoping for some guidance from all the experienced and gifted posters out there - please! We decided on absolute black honed for the counter - now need to decide the thickness. This dining room butler's pantry in the expanded dining room was suppose to appear like 2 independent furniture pieces. KD's goal was nothing like a kitchenette (or the adjacent kitchen) so he did not want 10 feet of a counter - hence the brown "china cabinet" piece steps back from the black "buffet counter" BUT he also planned for the counter heights to be different. The china cabinet has a thick (almost 4") of a wood slab between base and uppers. And he planned for 2 cm for the buffet. I know it is hard from these pictures (I'll try to get by there to get better ones today) but if we use 2 cm granite as recommended by the KD there will be only like 3/4 of an inch difference. If we use 3cm it could be shimmed up slightly to line up with the base of the routed edge on the dining room piece and seem in line. I don't want the 2cm to look like a mistake - a just miss BUT if the design with the step back already commits us to "mismatch" pieces I don't want to do it half way. HELP. I am at the end of a long line of too many decisions and just want this done and moving forward. Any help, suggestions, questions etc. would be GREATLY appreciated.

I would love to see how it turned out. We're doing a very similar renovation. So far our walls are alabaster and we've only purchased lower cabinets. I painted them Mindful Gray (BM). We just purchased our counter tops yesterday and they are unfinished butcher block. So now I'm panicking on what stain to use on them (our floors are Allen + Roth Russet Oak Laminate). I don't want the floors & counter tops to be too matchy and I'm considering just oiling them without staining. So many decisions!

Thanks - and I was planning the white perimeter uppers and lowers with a darker quartz counter top ( i like the darker charcoal -matte finish- on top of the white cabinets)and the light gray island cabinet with marbled quartz top. I do love a dark gray cabinet but I have a small kitchen and worried it may be too dark. We are a family of 5 with three messy kids - although they are getting older and less messy lol. Ill have to look at the stained gray - i just dont like to see the grain of wood in cabinets. This island below has the pendants I will do (I'll do 2 smaller Hicks pendants). I like the look of this island and top and the white cabinets with dark quartz in lower pic what do you think?

thinkdesignlive Thank you. The floor in the room adjacent to the kitchen is birch wood. I don't have much choice in terms of the floor than to put tiles. The tile will be going in the kitchen, the entrance, the hallway, the kitchen table area and the mudroom. The floor needs to be redone in that our tiles are cracking. The trim all over the home is white. So far I have picked the Olympia Glam series Tortora a neutral, good-for-traffic area tile. ( see picture above ) The wood of the kitchen cabinets is in good shape, but some doors need to be refreshed. The wood in some doors is getting bare due to water damage or lack of varnish in some areas. Luckily, I found someone willing to do a trial in my powder room cabinet to see what it would look like and whether he could refresh the cabinets. I would love to redo a full kitchen however I was quoted $ 70000 just for the cabinets if we still want wood. I agree with you that I am all over the place. I will follow your suggestion and create a new inspiration board. Thank you for this suggestion.

honestly I think the cabinets complement the countertop. I would attach a side panel to end of island, add black cabinet hardware, swap out appliances and change wall color

Classic white never fails, you already have white shelves and refrigerator. At some point remove the 4" riser and install white subway tile...

I hope you know what you are doing, as others alluded to painting cabinets is a lot of work- and 80% has to happen before you open the first can of paint. It can be done if you are careful and methodical. If that does not describe your personality live with the oak.

I understand that refinishing the cabinets involves quite a lot of work. I’ve been doing some extensive research, I understand that would be a project that will take about two weeks. Yes 80% of it would be prep work. I really appreciate all the info, and might just keep the cabinets as they are, but I would like to explore all the possibilities.

This is your granite with white cabinet and white subway in one of my rentals. May not be the current grey trend but its fine.

Looks great!

or you could just do a simple solid white counter and subway tile backsplash. Keep the oak. Cost would be comparable.

but I’m assuming this is a pandemic project?

Katie, it’s our Airbnb. Since all reservations have been cancelled, I figured it would be a good time to work on it. Last February we redid the bath. So I think it’s a “pandemic” project!

Do you think your counters look the same as the example with the blue cabinets? I prefer the blue to white.

Blue goes with the americana thing you have going. Since you’re painting you can Patch the holes and go with a cup pull maybe- in brass or brushed nickel would look good.
