White Cabinets and Black Countertops Make a Winning Combination
The new pairing replaces dark cabinets and beige countertops for a bright and airy modern update
After: Designer Jennifer Hall and the rest of the design team removed the soffits and switched the cabinets from dark wood to fresh white for an airier feel. They also relocated appliances and reoriented the breakfast table to improve both the utility and appearance of the space.

Kitchen at a Glance
Who lives here: Jason and Alexis Sabloff
Location: Herndon, Virginia
Size: 302 square feet (28 square meters)
Design team: Amy Finch (architect), Jennifer Hall (kitchen and bath) and Diego Cabrera (lead carpenter), all of Winn Design+Build
Before: The principal goal was to update the outmoded kitchen, improve the lighting and replace appliances.
The previous kitchen, shown here, was long, narrow and dark, with too-tall soffits, a funky green tiled floor and insufficient lighting. Homeowners Jason and Alexis Sabloff wanted to expand the kitchen toward the family room, relocate the existing pantry, create a mudroom and generally improve the circulation, utility and aesthetics of the kitchen and surrounding areas.
