When It's All Just Too Much.
Comments (67)Things not looking great again. Yesterday we discovered that 2 of our 3 new Totos arrived broken. I guess it's not that big a deal as they will be replaced, but now we have to wait again for new ones. We had a meeting with the GC on Tuesday night to discuss how things are going. It didn't go well. He says that I am nice to the whole crew, but not to him and that's why he barely comes to the house. He said the whole crew had noticed 'how I treat him' and that in 10 years of business he has never had this problem before. So now I feel uncomfortable in my own home. Now I'm wondering if it's me that's the problem. He called the following day to apologize for how he spoke to me, but I really don't much want to talk to him at all any more. He is asking us to eat a lot of extra expense (including most of the $940 Home Depot bill) because of all the 'extras' he has done including 'thousands' in additional plumbing work for free (?). He says we can go over the contract again but it will end up costing us thousands because he will charge for all the extras he's done. We appear to now be paying for wiring and other items I had no idea would be on the list. I thought he was paying for behind the walls stuff and we were paying for the 'pretty' stuff (including paint, but wiring??). My husband has stepped in to talk to him and yet I don't feel satisfied with that arrangement either. GC was meant to go to Home Depot for $80 worth of unidentified stuff (paid for by us) and when the Home Depot person called for our cc number (which GC no longer has) it was for $175. For 'wiring and boxes'. Huh? The problem is I just don't trust him and I guess the GC feels that and is (understandably) offended by it. But when we ask for receipts he flashes them at us and then says he needs them back. It's like the Hone Depot receipt debacle all over again. But we DO have extra issues that SHOULD be resulting in extra charges - the problem is getting numbers out of him for the extra issues is tough. So our sunroom leak issues and retiling (over the existing) bathroom floor are costing an additional $2400 on top of the $940 which he owed us from the Home Depot thing, but we didn't know that until he's ripped out carpeting and the place is a disgusting mess and we have no choice really but to do the work. I just wish he would tell us what this stuff would cost before starting it! I don't know what to do at this point. I feel like every time we question something he has a million explanations and excuses which never really tell you anything. He talks a mile a minute and you can't get a word in edgewise. I know we should be paying for the unexpected stuff, but the way it happens is so backwards and confusing to me and I end up wondering what is going on. Why for example have we paid $500 for insulation product as part of the contract as well as $814 in insulation as part of that Home Depot bill (that's NOT part of his $940 building materials which was all dry wall) and yet he says the remainder of the insulation in rolls downstairs isn't ours. It's his? He says we have to eat the $500 for insulation that was in the contract because he underbid the installation part of insulating and because we owe him so muc for the extra plumbing (which he hadn't mentioned before and we thought was included). Another example. He ran wiring for the baby's room high hats and ceiling fan. Told me the switch was slightly off center and not to straighten it or it might short. A couple of days later it stopped working. He says it's a coincidence and the wiring must have been 'chewed by rats or squirrels' and that it's an unforeseen issue. this seems like a remarkable coincidence to me. I thought if we contracted that he was installing 4 recessed lights and a fan, that meant they should work? The house has a newer panel with a ton of electric amps, but I guess that doesn't mean no problems. Maybe we're being unreasonable in our expectations. Apparently most people around here tell him to go ahead and fix unforeseen issues and just send them a bill. It's very possible as there's a lot of money around here. But we would like to know what things will cost in advance. He seems to take this as a personal insult. :( DH thinks he's on cocaine. I would not be surprised. I am exhausted and this has turned into a book. Sorry. Just needed to vent again....See MoreLinens N Things--closing ALL stores
Comments (24)No great loss, AFAIC - the one nearest me (about 35 minutes away) was/is always grubby, disorganized, and the employees were always surly, like they were doing you this huge favor by doing anything whatsoever for you. The only nearby competition is really TJMaxx, Penneys has a miniscule home section. There's a BB&B about 10 minutes away from me now and the store is always clean, well-lit, reasonably well organized and if the employees aren't terribly knowledgeable (high proportion of students from the nearby university) they're at least apologetic if they're clueless. Plus, the LNT here wouldn't accept expired coupons, even by one day, and I swear the stars and planets had to be in the right conjunction for them to take a BB&B coupon (which also couldn't be expired), while I've used 5 year old BB&B coupons - got a big stack on Freecycle - and expired LNT coupons at BB&B with no fuss whatsoever. We have to go to the Maul (yes, that spelling is intentional) this weekend because DH is in dire need of some new pants for work and I'm curious to see how many empty storefronts there are. I haven't been there in about three months. It does suck about the job losses, though. I learned about two layoffs of people close to me just this week, both with no notice at all. Just "here's your final check and the phone number for the unemployment office, now go". It's a downward spiral - get laid off, can't afford to buy anything that isn't the bare necessities, more companies go out of business because their sales are in the toilet and lay their people off, then they can't afford to buy stuff... restaurants are already closing right and left here, including one of our favorites. :-( An acquaintance who works for a car dealership (administrative staff, not sales) has been warned to start job-hunting now because despite discounts and rebates they've sold one car in the last 30 days so layoffs will be inevitable within the next couple of weeks, and unless there's a huge increase in sales the dealership may close by the end of the year....See MoreWhat Do You Do When A Restaurant Corrects Your Order?
Comments (14)We had a friend who couldn't tolerate onions. One night we went out for pizza with him and his wife. We ordered our pizza without onions. When it came out of the oven, it was covered in onions and he reminded them that the order had been for no onions. They told us to keep the pizza while they made a new one. Since the other three of us didn't have a problem with onions, we dug in while he waited for the no onion pizza to arrive. None of us felt bad about it since the mistake wasn't our error and we were told to keep the pizza. Usually, though, when I order something and it comes out wrong, the plate is taken away and new food brought to the table as Lisa mentioned above. I sometimes think that they just take the plate back to the kitchen and scrape off or remove the offending item or add whatever was missing unless it's something like the food wasn't prepared properly or what was brought wasn't even close to what I ordered....See MoreAre you ordering curbside from local restaurants?
Comments (46)Yes what Lukki Irish said, we will find out more as we do more research on transmission paths, what is and is not safe. We have some tentative data right now, but more will be forthcoming as the virus spreads around the world. The reason I am willing to err on the side of caution is that I don't have a place I like or trust to eat out at right now even under the best of circumstances so now's not going to be the time to start experimenting. I wish that there was a way for me to support the one or two places I do like to go just to help them make it through these times, but right now all my discretionary giving and spending is going to the local food pantry. Many of our other less formal means of food distribution have had to close temporarily here until we can regroup when there are more resources to keep us safe. Those who can gear up now for maximum safety are having to meet more and more need as time goes on. We are one of the top states right now for virus spread. Right now the virus prevalence is relatively low compared to what it will be in future months, so we have no way of knowing how it will spread here in the US. Right now is the calm before the storm. A lot depends on how we manage the crisis and how successful we are at keying in on lowering the rate of spread and the prevalence in society. For example if 50% of the population gets infected it will be a lot safer than with 70% of the population infected, and on and on. If we can identify and effectively quarantine the sick, they will not likely be at work spreading the virus. But if not, all bets are off. That's why quick, accurate, inexpensive and safe testing is so vital to us getting back in business....See MoreAnnie Deighnaugh
