ordering from Sequoia
Comments (8)You know that what we grow belongs in the genus Rosa. Species roses are species within the Genus Rosa. BUT, and this is the biggie, there's a Genus called Hulthemia. Similar, but different. Hulthemia persica is a native of ...Persia...and that part of the world. And the plants' leaves lack stipules. And even more interesting, the petals have a deeper colored splotch at the base of the petals. Jack Harkness in England created four persica hybrids. Some are hard to grow, and several may be lost. Enter Ralph Moore, who has made a series of crosses and the leaves are persica like and the splotches are definitely there. There's been a discussion on Rose Hybridizers Forum (linked below) about hulthemias. My comments on there suggest a colder hardiness for hulthemias than I would have guessed. Jim Sproul has a wonderful photo of petals of some of his crosses. I would just ask Sequoia which one(s) they have and ask them to pick the one with the strongest splotch. (Inelegant word for such an interesting feature.) Here is a link that might be useful: Chatter about hulthemias...See MoreAre you close to Kalama? Need help please.
Comments (3)I just bought a place about 5 miles south of Kalama. I would love to see your garden sometime. I can't help you with free pots, but I know where you can get some cheap. I see that you've got Lilium canadense on your "want" list. I can spare a few seedlings, or a couple of dozen seeds. I tried to email you via this site, but I don't think it worked. You can contact me via my website, shown below. Here is a link that might be useful: OWLS...See MoreSequoia II comments please.
Comments (11)The Mississauga News Jun 29, 2006 A Mississauga company has voluntarily agreed to recall about 1,300 wood-burning fireplaces in the United States as requested by the U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Three models of Sequoia Fireplaces, manufactured by CFM Corporation, are being recalled because of a potential fire hazard. Because of insufficient insulation or a missing weld, some of the units could pose a hazard. No injuries have been reported involving any of the products, the U.S. agency said. Only models EWF30, EWF36 and EWF36A are affected by the recall in the CFM fireplace line. They were sold for between $2,200 and $3,000 a unit in Canada and the U.S. by Vermont Castings dealers between Jan. 1 2003 and mid-April this year. Consumers are advised to stop using the product immediately. CFM has agreed to go to homes to repair every affected fireplace. Photographs of the models being recalled can be viewed by visiting www.cpsc.gov. Comments (6)Actually, seedlings of trees are perfectly adapted to outdoor life. It is only those plants which have been greenhouse-raised from day one which need gentle acclimation to outdoor sun and wind. If this thing started on its own as an outdoor volunteer, it is outdoors that it should have stayed. Light levels indoors are very dim, even where our eyes do not perceive it to be so. And if you will think back to 5th grade science, plants run on this thing called light. Also, very likely overwatered in that huge pot. I mean "huge" for that size of plant. All nurseries everywhere start plants in tiny containers (if in containers at all) and only pot up one size at a time, so as not to lead to over-wet conditions and the resulting root loss. Think to nature. Seeds either fall where they are able to germinate or they don't. Then, amongst the numerous ones which do germinate, only a small percentage actually make it to adulthood. But those that do are utterly on their own, from day one....See Morelynnette
