Just for Fun...What is the plant you just have to have?
Comments (26)Hi all, I'm just loving these posts, they really lift the spirits on these very dull days. We're still dealing with the fog up here, I've never known it to hang around for so long. Seriously now, I have another plant that I just had to have and I need some help on how to grow it. A few years ago I bought a rooted cutting of a shrub named Dichroa febrifuga at the U.B.C. plant sale. It 's evergreen, has lovely blue flowers, then berries, it growth, in opinion is like a hydrangea. I believe it comes from Asia. It doesn't winter well for me outside so I've dug it up, planted it a container and it's wintering in the greenhouse. I'm guessing it's marginal here in Z7/8. Any ideas out there? Comments (8)Thank you all for playing! I didn't even want to bring up the situation on the inside, because I felt overwhelmed just looking at the mold and the basement toilet which appears to have no door? I agree about the hanging cabinets in the kitchen and that door being awkwardly placed, though I can never give up a way to let the dogs out...too lazy! I agree about painting it all one color ( would choose cream, with putty colored shutters and a colorful door, maybe) removing the shrubs, and repositioning the walkway. Our walkway is the same way--leads to almost the top of the driveway, which means any visitors have to squeeze past cars to get to our door. Annoying and not welcoming. The back of the house is indeed plug ugly. I'd just plant a whole row of hydrangeas and call that a fix, after fixing/replacing the brick patios. For sun relief, I'd like a pergola I could plant with wisteria. My friend has one to die for and I have too much shade to justify it at my house. I feel like decks are far too much work in our climate--my neighbor's looks quite awful and the one friend I have who has a nice looking one has to spend money on it every other year. Our brick patio has required zero work other than a power wash in the decade since it was put in, so I'm a fan. re: the ugly wires on the back of the house, I will never understand why they put the service hookups on the back of the house. There is almost always a side of the house people aren't going to have to look at from either the front or the back patio--why don't they put it there? My house is just like this--all the wires lead right to where you're sitting :(...See MoreWhat's the most interesting thing you've learned online?
Comments (28)When I became interested in making jewelry, I knew absolutely nothing about it. A local bead store helped me get started with some basic tools and showed me how to string some beads on wire and crimp the ends. That got me hooked, but the internet is where I learned so many of the techniques I use today from a wrapped loop to much more complicated wire weaves and wrapping. My next goal is to teach myself how to use a torch. I've already learned how to make balled headpins and basic fold forming; fusing and soldering is on my list along with setting stones. The generosity of the members of online jewelry forums, bloggers and youtube video producers in sharing their knowledge for free is something I very much appreciate. I'm now in a position to share knowledge with others and I gladly do that to pay it forward. Another favorite past time is looking up recipes, cooking techniques and nutritional information. Like many of the rest of you, I also like to look up obscure facts and information. I love that a question can randomly pop into my head and I can instantly look up the answer. We travel a lot and the internet has made it possible to learn about the area we want to visit, plan an itinerary and book excursions, airline ticks and hotel rooms without ever leaving our house. Online selling sites like Etsy, Ebay, Artfire and Amazon Handmade, along with others, have made it possible for small crafters like myself to sell their products to a world wide market. We used to be limited to local craft/art shows and home sales parties, but now people can extend their reach beyond their wildest imaginations. Twitter, FB, Pinterest and Instagram make is possible to market products for free or little cost and reach huge numbers of people. It's possible to build one's own website if they wish to go out on their own and bypass the selling sites. Besides all of the above, the internet can bring people together to form very real communities such as the one we have here at the KT. I have met some of the nicest people online who have become friends more precious to me than some of the people I know in real life. The kindness, compassion, wisdom, knowledge and generosity of these people can be humbling. I find myself laughing at their jokes and stories, crying along with them during times of grief and troubles, celebrating accomplishments and milestones, admiring their talents and sharing advice when one hits a stumbling block. For all the negatives, and there are some, it's really opened up entire new worlds to so many of us. For those who are home bound, it can be their only contact with other people which makes it possible to have a social life. Families that are spread far and wide can stay in touch and the older generations can have very real relationships with the young generations. It's a wonderful thing for grandparents/grandchildren who live hundreds or thousands of miles apart....See MoreWhat’s one thing you miss? And one thing you are taking comfort in?
Comments (60)I was thinking yesterday--life hasn't changed YET. Church: I go to adoration on my way to work and find Father saying Mass--telecasting on Facebook and stayed so, so far that is all same same. This Sunday it won't be. DH goes to work as usual, I do to--my 'work' has changed as students are 'on line' but still. Card group is cancelled..we take our walks as weather permits as usual.DH's compound bow league has been on until this coming week but it was near the last weeks anyway. Our offspring all live in other States. They all continue to work--DD#1 is working from home managing her counties website. DD#2 is working on a treatment in her laboratory for this virus. The cows are peculating--it's about three weeks out yet. Son like father is doing his engineering thing...I think those of us who are not movers and shakers who are home bodies are really not as affected. I shop once a week. Will go this morning at 6 as usual..will get what I can. Yesterday shopping the local walmart for students, what I saw says I will be able to get what I want--milk/fresh vegis/fruit. I buy sales so have a freezer full of meat and staples. Stay calm enjoy being out of the rat race. Life here in the quiet simpler lives is really not so bad....See MoreJilly
