Xmas decor:Anyone else feeling that less is more this year?
Comments (62)I am also one who has enjoyed reading this thread. I have gotten rid of a lot of my Christmas decorations...and I was one the used to put a tree in every room (including the bathrooms), but have cut waaaayyy back....mostly because of health problems and a DH who does not "decorate"....so the outside lights are not put out anymore....because in this cold Kansas weather, it was me out there in January taking them down. I put wreaths with red bows in the windows, along with battery operated candles and a big wreath on the front door. I only put up a smaller tree in the LR and one in the basement family room where we all gather on Christmas to exchange gifts.....and of course, do decorate the fireplace mantle and I use a lot of bright red poinsettias scattered around. I always put out my grouping of singing carolers...they are so ugly that they are cute...and of course, never leave out the two nativity scenes that mean so much to me. When I looked through all of my boxes of decorations, I just kept telling myself.....what you take up from the basement has to come back down....and with my bad knees, it didn't take me long to just leave them there. I do believe that less is more...too many decorations doesn't give the eye a place to rest and gives the "cluttered" look. However you chose to decorate, I hope that each of you and your family have a very Merry Christmas and I hope that 2009 will be a better year for all of us....See MoreDone but not decorated - moved furniture into place
Comments (30)Thanks, trailrunner! Les, that's an interesting thought but I don't think it would look very good for a couple of reasons. This table has leaves that slide out from under the exisitng table top and there's a wavy gap on each side where the leaves join. Plus the leaves are a much darker color (I'm guessing because they didn't see the light as often) so I'd only use it with a tablecloth. I have no idea what I am going to do with the chairs yet. I don't have any chairs for the big table in the library at the moment (can't afford the Carrington Court ones right now) so either two of these chairs or the two non-matching end chairs with arms, will go in the library. But I'm not married to the idea of having chairs all around. As for the chandelier, we just had a ton of sheetrock work done plus all the downstairs ceilings refloated and the entire house painted so it is not in the near future but a possibility down the road. I have my chandelier that I love but had to take down because it was too low. My thought was, besides the expense of the electrician and sheet rock and painter, I wanted to live with the room swap for a while and make sure we really liked it and make sure we had the table in the right place before we went to all that effort but I'm sure it will happen eventually. Of course considering the way hubby has walked by the room 10 times today and each time said something about how nice it is, I think I know his thoughts on it. :) But we always knew that room would work for a dining room. It's getting the sitting room figured out that has me the most bothered. Did you see the picture I posted of the dark tables I could use there? And it didn't help that the rug for there arrived today and is going back on Monday. It was so wrong. I ordered another one, more of a tone than a pattern, that I hope will be better. (Wish I had gotten the Chloe recliners in a solid color...ah, hindsight, my good friend.)...See MoreRedoing family room, need help with decor, colors. Brown leather couch
Comments (9)Really nice room. Looks comfortable and inviting. Good choice w/new sofas. Like the fireplace as is ... but less clutter could improve the look of it. Not sure what the picture is above the piano. If it is a family photograph, reframe it and the family photo on the mantel with the same frames and put both above the piano. Really like your coffee table. One day it will be a valuable antique if you don't booger it up. So, for the coffee table, consider taking the table to a glass company and having a dark gray tinted thick glass top created for it -- no refinish for the table necessary. (Alternately, cover everything but the top and paint the top only -- perhaps black or else the same white as your cabinets.) Do the same for your current end table as you do for the coffee table. If you're going to add a second end table, since matching the existing one would likely prove difficult, consider a totally different look -- perhaps a wood 2-drawer filing cabinet? http://realsolidoak.com/office.html...See MoreWhat color for my entryway runner rug?
Comments (11)Thanks for all the suggestions. Where the entrance widens is actually where to kitchen begins (appliances are hidden to the left), I've added a wooden bar table and black chairs that go up against the right wall in the kitchen. The length of the entrance before it widens is actually 10ft now that I'm measuring it with tape. I'm picturing a 6ft runner at the entrance and then a 3x5 area rug in the kitchen (where it widens in the pic). Do you think the runner and area rug should be a set that go together? Any help with that would be great!...See Morepitt89
