Does anyone else feel like they 'give up' this time of year?
Comments (21)Yes, Ginny, that's a good point. My DH keeps suggesting that I get a greenhouse so I can "garden all year" - and I keep saying No way! My fall gardening season is coming to an abrupt halt after tomorrow, as I'm leaving for a 5-week trip on Saturday. There are lots of volunteer tomatoes about to ripen, the crape myrtle has just started to really bloom fully, the huge Salvia leucanthemum is peaking, and most of the old mums have not really started showing color but are full of buds. The Franklinia altamaha is looking perfect ... at least a couple of them (I have 5, I think) are loaded with flowers and buds. My newly planted border still needs constant attention to keep ahead of the weeds and volunteers and to add mulch here and there and check the soil moisture, and the newer trees and shrubs need to be checked every few days to be sure they're getting their water etc needs met. When I get home, it will all be frosty and brown. DH is not going to be able to keep track of anything, and I'm just hoping we start getting some regular rain, soon. It will be spring before I know what survives this kind of neglect. So, if you can keep gardening this month, count your blessings, and enjoy these last few weeks of the season. It's going to be a long winter!...See Morehandcrafted gifts less appreciated more every year?
Comments (19)Patty_cakes, try making photo albums for family members. Since we don't live close enough to most of our family for them to participate in all our girls (and now grandson's) activities, every year for Christmas my parents, MIL, Grandmothers, and Great Aunt the photo albums from the past year. I begin with Dec 1st and go thru Thanksgiving. During the year I have reprints made and keep each persons in a seperate box in order. Then after Thanksgiving I start cropping, glueing... till they are all done. That is their primary present and for the past 20 years it has been a hit. The cousins and other relatives get copies of their family members I happen to take and some pics from our major events (graduation, new baby, cruise... ) put into a small album. They too seem to appreciate the pictures. Personally I love getting the dishtowels with the croched tops, dishtowel aprons, hot pads, oven mits, anything practical. One of the things I like to do is give practical gifts in unusual ways, socks as Santa's longjohns, kitchen towels as kitchen angels, towels folded as animals, potholders folded as bows, flower vases filled with smelly jelly (that can be removed when dried). Seven years ago when our youngest was in 4th grade, she made DH a Christmas tie. He still wears it every Christmas then carefully packs it away till next year. beverly...See MorePeople trying to eat less meat: Is anyone else 'into' tempeh?
Comments (14)Hi biwako - I have been a vegetarian for 16+ years. Back then it was very hard to find good veggie food. Now days the possibilities are endless. IÂm not very familiar with tempeh. I do like tofu when itÂs fried. I like standard recipes like tacos, chili, chicken dishes, meatloaf, etc. I just donÂt like the idea of eating meat. We are now able to buy soy based "chicken, steak strips, ground beef, turkey, shrimp, BBQ ribs, hot dogs, bacon, sausage" and more. Were we live in CA all of these meat substitutes are available at all regular grocery stores in the freezer section. Morning Star Farms makes most of what I mentioned. Gardenburger now makes more than just patties. I donÂt want to sound like a walking billboard, but if anyone is trying to eat less meat, but still wants to eat their favorite recipes, I suggest giving these substitutes a try. The taste and texture is practically identical to the real thing. DH is not a vegetarian, and likes them all. Will you please send me the tempeh directions? IÂd like to try it. Thanks. Comments (35)Have you considered painting that entire fireplace wall in a super hot orange/red glossy color to match the oxidized copper? Would be a show stopper! Or you could go to the other side of the color wheel for a contrast to it. You don't seem to be taking advantage of all the floor space. Larger, more colorful, fun, boho rugs would encourage spreading out the seating a bit more. The beige chesterfield seems a bit formal for the relaxes Bohemian family feeling you're after. Something a bit more slouchy would set a more relaxed tone....See Moremaddiemom6
