Less isn't more... MORE is more!
Comments (60)So here's how they look from further back... which is why I mistakenly said they looked fine. It's been chilly here (to me... not to anyone else) for the past couple days, so I've stayed in the house and done "house things." Today, I went out there and took these pics: And here we have close-ups of some examples of what I'm seeing happening. Also, I've noticed the new leaves seem stunted. They don't grow very big before they either stop growing or fall off. Misshapen leaves, 'browning out'... Hard to really tell in this picture, but the leaf in the center is sorta 'browning out.' If this was a fancy goldfish, I'd say this one has 'dropsy.' Some weird new-growth habit, among other things. More brown spots, plus white spots. At the edge of the pot, you can see the leaves are dying here and there. This is an attempt at a close-up of one of the worst ones. Small leaves that fall off if you even touch them. Another particularly affected plant. The first sign of a problem on a previously robust plant. I don't know what the problem is, but it's obviously contagious. I'm going to have to pull all of this out, dump the brand new potting media into the trash, wash and sterilize the pots, wait for some undetermined length of time, then replace it all. Super bummer. I only hope that whatever it is doesn't spread to things that AREN'T Coleus....See MoreDoes anyone else feel like they 'give up' this time of year?
Comments (21)Yes, Ginny, that's a good point. My DH keeps suggesting that I get a greenhouse so I can "garden all year" - and I keep saying No way! My fall gardening season is coming to an abrupt halt after tomorrow, as I'm leaving for a 5-week trip on Saturday. There are lots of volunteer tomatoes about to ripen, the crape myrtle has just started to really bloom fully, the huge Salvia leucanthemum is peaking, and most of the old mums have not really started showing color but are full of buds. The Franklinia altamaha is looking perfect ... at least a couple of them (I have 5, I think) are loaded with flowers and buds. My newly planted border still needs constant attention to keep ahead of the weeds and volunteers and to add mulch here and there and check the soil moisture, and the newer trees and shrubs need to be checked every few days to be sure they're getting their water etc needs met. When I get home, it will all be frosty and brown. DH is not going to be able to keep track of anything, and I'm just hoping we start getting some regular rain, soon. It will be spring before I know what survives this kind of neglect. So, if you can keep gardening this month, count your blessings, and enjoy these last few weeks of the season. It's going to be a long winter!...See MoreSpending more or less on Xmas this year?
Comments (24)Wow bill. I feel for the homeless people, but I'm not going to help buy them a house, modest or otherwise. I'm going to buy "stuff" for my kids and their spouses and for my mom that I know they want but can't afford to buy for themselves. Some years the "stuff" is more needed than others - like buying blinds for one kid's entire house. This year the "stuff" is less needed but still desired, like GPS units for the cars for daughter and her husband, and cooking classes for son and his wife. I'm also going to get non-neccessary "stuff" for my husband, buying him something for Christmas that he would be buying for himself in the next 6 months or so anyway. I'm a fairly generous person and give a lot of financial support to my mom (who otherwise has only a small SS income), an uncle (disabled and also otherwise has only a small SS income), a sister (special needs child's needs prevents her from working), and a college student nephew, in addition to giving to a couple of select charities (which do help the homeless) but I'm not going to stop giving welcomed presents to my loved ones in order to give money to help house the homeless....See MoreChandeliers with Xmas decorations anyone? I'll probably mess up, so just in case, I'm attaching the link to my blog, and if you scroll down (through Parts 2 and then 1 of my Holiday Home Tour), you'll see my various chandeliers dressed for the holidays !!
