Sterilizing soil-less mix with boiling water and H202
Comments (6)Agree. Damp-off is caused by the grower, not by the soil-less mix. It is caused by excessive moisture and inadequate air circulation around the seedlings. And the beneficial microbes in compost, if added to your seed starting mix, will actually kill the fungi in the mix that can lead to damp-off when proper conditions are not maintained by the grower. Many of us who grow from seed routinely add compost to our mix - both starting and growing-on mix - with no problems (and with bigger and healthier seedlings as pictures in several posts can attest ;). Indeed most soil-less seed starting mixes on the market already contain some compost. Sorry, but flushing seed starting mix with water - boiling or otherwise - may make the grower feel better but it merely drains out whatever nutrients it might have contained in the mix. But do your own test comparison trying some each way - always room to learn something new. ;) Dave PS: It's fine to use your perlite as is. It is an inert material....See MoreLighting/wall color could I use to make this room look less sad?
Comments (15)I like your table and chairs. 👌🏼 You can really go in so many directions with your room. As @cawaps mentioned, with a long enough chain, you can swag a chandelier. to center over the table. And a rug could be an easy way to add some color and/or texture, etc. - if you are open to bringing in a rug. Your floor is beautuful and you don’t necessarily need a rug with the style of your space. Personal choice. I think your current wall color is ok, but of course you can go many ways with wall color - as also suggested above. So many ways you can go. But just simply adding a light fixture, and maybe a plant in the corner, as mentioned, would be enough to really change the feel of the space. I also agree with HU-187528210 re: black being one idea that could be striking for a chandelier in your space. And art on the long wall could be nice. As one idea, I could see a black & white gallery. I also had the same ”inexplicable” urge to use pink in your room that @cawaps experienced. (Thanks for forging ahead with that, @cawaps. I thought I was just losing it, completely. 😂 It’s nice to see the pink; and your renderings look great!) If you do per chance like pink, but don’t want to bring it in with wall color or rug - you could consider bringing it in with art and/or a floral arrangement....See MoreNeed Help! Comments (31)Lucas, you have some decent furniture to work with. I think you need some fine tweaking, color and some art work for the walls. Or some wood shelves and a bit of life via plants. (that half dead corn plant doesn't count! lol) here's an arrangement w/your desk under the window. your walls need some extra help. for example, look at this soft sage/gray wall color. would look nice w/your wood furniture, chair and your rug. Here's how to position the desk under the window. I like this w/floating wood shelves over the desk. if you move the desk back to the other wall, try a new wall color maybe an accent wall, Or something a bit more masculine, try BM Kendall Charcoal. bring in some other wood shelves (can you DIY? go to the lumbyard and get some walnut boards. cut to size. float them w/lag bolts or grab some brackets of some sort) I like the dark wall color w/a soft white for the other walls. have you seen the DIY wood shelves w/the iron pipe fittings? you could easily make up something like that for the walls. another layout floating the desk in the center. chair in the corner, bookcase on the one wall. can you install a semi flush mount light in the center? How about some artwork or photographs? your walls are very empty. you have anything w/a bit of color? I think if you did that one wall in a dark color like the green or this black, maybe hung some pendants like this, did a cabinet in one corner w/a nice plant on top, it would look nice. perhaps this type of set up. you can do some simple DIY bookcases. look at Ikea BillyBookcase hack. (see links below) you could easily copy these shelves. even on a smaller/thinner level, painted dark like this, would look perfect in your office. center light, rug, wall decor. maybe a glass door?? https://www.southernrevivals.com/office-makeover-reveal-ikea-hack-built-billy-bookcases/...See MoreI need help decorating and making it feel homely.
Comments (12)You got some good advice above for figuring out what to store where. I have found that the biggest issue I have is having too much stuff for in my kitchen. If that is your issue (not everyone's) I found a solution. I look at each gadget in my kitchen and know why I bought it and I want to keep it. I took a day and a few bags of different sized rubber bands and put a rubber band on the handle of each pot and pan, lid, all the gadgets and around each spice container. I put a blank post it note in each serving bowl or platter and in each of my baking dishes, pans, cookie sheets, small appliances . . . (did not bother doing every cup/plate/bowl). When I used things I removed the rubber band or post it note. In 6 months I went in and knew if this was something I used and should stay in my kitchen. I still couldn't part with everything I hadn't used, but I gave away most of it. Those things I couldn't part with I put in a storage tote with the date on the top. If I ran into a need I could rescue the item from the tote. 6 months later I took the tote (still had almost everything in it that was there 6 months earlier) and didn't even open it - just took it to a charitable re-sale store....See MoreCindyR
