Kim Rupert on making roses hardy and how to make fruits sweeter
Comments (11)Hey, Kippy, believe it or not, we have a burgeoning wine growing industry here in the UK. I think much depends on the variety of grape (we tend to grow sparkling whites here in the UK, often very similar to German wines). Not even the most optimistic weather-watcher could claim we have long hot summers but there are varietals which will do well in the cool and damp english climate. We can certainly manage outdoor dessert grapes too (Boskoop Glory is a good one for me) so why not have a go? There is a lot of fun to be had training the vines - the major fiddly bit is thinning out the bunches of grapes - and they look quite fabulous over a pergola too (although mine is on a couple of posts and wire). Mind, the growing of them is easy - the making a good wine is likely to be beyond me. I had a period, years ago, of making horrid brews such as nettle wine, parsnip wine and so on - I still drank them though - after the first few gulps, they slipped down OK and they were certainly poky (shudder)....but anyway, I prefer beer (ale, NOT lager). I too wondered if Kim was going to write a book. He should. Failing miserably with my Meyer lemon (and I had wanted one for ages) - looking sad, pallid and completely growthless - sulks in the greenhouse, weighing me down with guilt and bafflement. Swinish fruit....See MoreKim Rupert/roseseek
Comments (17)What Kim doesn't know is that my 'Lynnie' has grown at least 18" taller and 2' wider than it was when he saw it growing in my garden. I wish I could just let it go to see how large the rose would become in this climate. I had to tip prune it last week to protect it from snow breakage. What I find so interesting about the performance of this plant is that my climate is so different from Kim's. During the summer I have triple digit temps for weeks at a time. In winter, the day temps are in the 40s with night temps in the teens. Yet, during the rose season, 'Lynnie' is always covered in bloom with dense foliage. I am glad I gave it enough room to really stretch out. It's glorious in my garden. Smiles, Lyn...See MoreKim Rupert's polyantha rose, LAUREN
Comments (13)jasminerose, the same person was also selling the not-Lauren on ebay this past Spring. The photos were so obviously NOT Lauren that it was laughable. I reported that person to eBay as well, but eBay flat out doesn't give a rat's hiney. The listing was posted for several weeks, if not months, before it disappeared. I can vouch for Lauren's hardiness. Her first winter here I forgot and left her outside in a one gallon pot....where water puddles all winter. And froze solid in the Winter Vortex that year. Sooooo...she sat frozen solid in 3-6" of ice for almost two months, with lows reaching well below 0 more than a few times, yet she didn't lose an inch of cane and was in bloom by late April. I love love love this rose. She has a character all her own, sassy but beguiling. I now have four. She is somewhat susceptible to BS, but almost EVERYthing gets BS here, lol. And she can be forgiven much because of her other sterling traits. John...See MoreThank you, Ingrid and Kim Rupert!
Comments (36)Multiflora generally does not like high heat, high aridity, highly alkaline conditions. Of course, your mileage may vary. I didn't have a lot of luck with multiflora budded plants in Newhall over the 18 year life of that garden. Multiflora enjoys a more acidic root run, so if the area is prepared as you would for azaleas, camellias, blueberries, etc. and mulched with an acidic type mulch (oak leaves, camellia mix, etc.) perhaps it might work? It appears there is enough China in Pink Clouds to mitigate the multiflora requirements as I've not had the same issues from its roots as I did with multiflora and its hybrids. They were chronically chlorotic due to the high alkalinity and many (including early hybrid musks) just failed to thrive....See Moredianela7analabama
