I have three of your roses in my first year garden, Lynnie, Little Butterflies and Lauren. Do you have any info you can pass on as to mature sizes of these roses? I don't think I gave Lynnie enough room and might need to move it early next year. Thanks for any info. so glad to see you post here.

Hi Harborrose! How neat! I'm happy you have my "babies"! I honestly don't know what to tell you about how large any of these will get where you are. I've seen Too Cute twice the size it's ever been for me in Santa Rosa, CA. Roseblush grows Lynnie in Northern California and it is half again as large for her as it ever is here. In the Los Angeles area, Lynnie has typically gotten just under four by four feet, much smaller than the one in NorCal. Little Butterfly is most often three by nearly three here. Lauren is not quite as large, though I've seen it significantly larger at Eurodesert Roses than I've ever had it here. In Valenica, CA, Lauren is usually two and a half feet by three. I guess it not only depends upon the intensity of the light, available heat and water but also how close to the nuclear waste dump you grow it and how deep you "pile it on"?

I hope my "children" are behaving for you! You know how parents always shudder until they are reassured they're being good! Thanks! Kim

Lauren was beautiful this summer - here's a pic. Lynnie hasn't bloomed yet, but Little butterflies has. I like all of them and will keep you posted. Thanks for the info. about your babies - I can see you would consider them to be so! :)

Hi Carol: I read your posts 3-times, since you gave very valuable info. Many thanks! You are right that no conclusion can be made as to own-root or grafted is healthier, it depends which one has a bigger root compared to the mass above. The ratio of top growth versus root growth is what determine health. Someone grew 2 Love Potion floribunda, one grafted, and one own-root. The own-root got BS due to wimpy root, the grafted one is healthier. In contrast, Jude the Obscure as Grafted-on-Dr. Huey became a 7 foot monster in its 3rd year, with black spots late fall, despite their spraying every 10 days at the rose park. Three people reported own-root Jude the Obscure as very healthy, 3' x 3' as in my zone 5a, to 4' x 4' warmer. When the mass above is too big for the root to support, diseases can occur. Grafted roses can be healthy if pruned right, or if they don't face a harsh winter like my zone 5a. I dug up many Knock-outs, most lost their Dr. Huey if buried deep in wet clay. One in a dry spot had only Dr. Huey. One in a perfect spot had both Dr. Huey and own-root together, but Dr. Huey's root is many times bigger than the own-root that grew above. It's LOSE-LOSE for roses grafted on Dr. Huey in my zone 5a. If I plant them at ground level, they die, then Dr. Huey takes over. If I plant the bud-union 4 to 6" below ground level, Dr. Huey disintegrate, leaving a wimpy own-root. See below picture of Yves Piaget x Bohemia Rhapsody by breeder Robert Neil Rippetoe in CA. It's a 6-months old rose that I grow from the seeds that he sent. It's 100% thornless, dark green, and twice bigger than all the bands I bought. As to soil test, Carol, I wrote the procedure to test your soil pH using 50 cents of red cabbage and $1 of distilled water. It's more accurate than litmus paper. Hey, Kippy, believe it or not, we have a burgeoning wine growing industry here in the UK. I think much depends on the variety of grape (we tend to grow sparkling whites here in the UK, often very similar to German wines). Not even the most optimistic weather-watcher could claim we have long hot summers but there are varietals which will do well in the cool and damp english climate. We can certainly manage outdoor dessert grapes too (Boskoop Glory is a good one for me) so why not have a go? There is a lot of fun to be had training the vines - the major fiddly bit is thinning out the bunches of grapes - and they look quite fabulous over a pergola too (although mine is on a couple of posts and wire). Mind, the growing of them is easy - the making a good wine is likely to be beyond me. I had a period, years ago, of making horrid brews such as nettle wine, parsnip wine and so on - I still drank them though - after the first few gulps, they slipped down OK and they were certainly poky (shudder)....but anyway, I prefer beer (ale, NOT lager). I too wondered if Kim was going to write a book. He should. Failing miserably with my Meyer lemon (and I had wanted one for ages) - looking sad, pallid and completely growthless - sulks in the greenhouse, weighing me down with guilt and bafflement. Schmidt's Smooth Yellow budded to VI Fortuniana flowered this morning. Conditions were perfect for it to have scent. I've spent quite a while sniffing it and trying to analyze what it smells like to me. First, it definitely has a strong multiflora scent. Quite sweet initially and high in my sinuses. The sweetness quickly gives way to a skunky, bitter sensation down in my throat. It's an impression I get when I taste beer and when I smell multiflora hybrids, what many continue calling "hybrid musks". Toward the end of the bitterness in my throat, there is a residual "peppery" scent, also in my sinuses, though it, too, has a sweetness very similar to what I perceive from the sepals, peduncles and new growth tips of Mutabilis. I perceive the same scent from the same parts of Gloire des Rosomanes and many other older garden roses. Add cedar to the mix, and you have what I smell from Grandmother's Hat. Eugenie Lamesch supposedly had a distinct "violet" scent. I can now imagine how that could have been determined. I seldom get any scent from most violet flowers. I do get a strong sweetness from yellow Pansies and many violas. Pansy, viola and violet plants themselves have that same skunky bitterness in the back of my throat multiflora scent has. Schmidt's smells quite sweet and peppery right now, with that strong violet "skunky, bitterness", almost a taste response rather than a scent. Perhaps that is what was perceived and described as the "violet scent"? This plant has been held in partial sun where it receives regular water and high (for here) humidity due to the density of the surrounding potted and in-ground plants. Campanula, I'm so jealous of you & your EYES FOR YOU! Now that's a rose we need to get over here in the US! But, a really lovely "similar" rose I got from Edmunds this season that did very well for me is BULL'S EYE. Beautiful Hulthemia big-eyed blooms that change color and repeat really well. Loved it! And a new one I got from Pickering from Fryer's is JAM & JERUSALEM. Lovely apricot-y peachy blooms that repeated really well throughout the season. Kind of a shortish plant, but very lovely. Yet another one I got from Pickering is LET'S CELEBRATE, another Fryer rose. This first season it didn't do all that great, but the deer got to it a couple of times. But the blooms are going to be very interesting to watch over the next few yrs as the plant matures. It's a very interesting mauve with a white reverse, and it's supposed to get all speckly and spotty. Mine did a little bit, but, like I said the deer got to it so I only ever got the one flush on it. Plus it's in a pot in a not-so-sunny area of the yard. I think I need to move it... or just get it in the ground! And a rose I got from Vintage at the end of the season here, is PICNIC. The cute little plant arrived with two whopping blooms that lasted for weeks! I'm gonna love this one!! Oh, and one of my absolute favorites from this yr was actully one of the J&P test roses. Not sure if they will every release it, but I sure hope so. It's gorgeous!! I certainly hope someone does start selling BLUE FOR YOU again soon. You guys are missing out on a truly gorgeous and verrry "blue" rose! Got mine from Cliff before he closed up, and it's been a real stunner. It's in mostly shade. Does really well!

Your border is going to be beautiful when everything matures! I can't wait to see photos of it next summer. I am thrilled you grow my roses, thank you! Now, I can look forward to report cards on them from a climate quite different from mine.

I love plants which blend well into borders. I enjoy Hybrid Tea flowers, but their plants just don't do it with perennials. Shrubby, incessantly flowering bushes do. When you can select for good health, heavy flowering and lower prickle count, it makes your (and mine!) kind of gardening a whole lot more fun!

I've used Lynnie extensively the past two years in breeding. Here is one of her daughters which has impressed me this fall. So far, NO prickles, NO disease and an intense, sweet fragrance which is lasting until the final petal falls. She's a cross with Tom Carruth's Julia Child. Not surprisingly, she is pink. Most species are pink and pink seedlings are the easiest color to get. They also tend to be the healthiest and most vigorous. I guess Ma Nature doesn't like wasting good genes on bad combinations? A pink Julia Child! Kim, keep us updated on how it does. Reading about the experiences of people in different parts of the country or world with different roses is why I keep coming back here. It's fascinating to me too, especially when in the mix of people contributing there are horticulturalists, entomologists, breeders and long time rose growers, not just newbies like me.

Lauren has grown well for me here in TX and I love the blooms. Kim- thanks for the info on 'Lynchild'. I look forward to finding out more about it as Julia Child is one of my favorites.

One of the eye opening things about identifying foreign insects for a living is realizing just how many insects (at least in their immature life stages) can't be identified (to species) - by anyone - because the necessary research has yet to be done. Sometimes they can't even be identified with confidence to an insect family, let alone a genus or species.

You never stop being a newbie. It's just that your newbie status changes slightly.

Kim, Little Butterflies does not appear to be listed on Help Me Find. Is there a reason for that? It's commercially available, yes?

York, that's my fault, the correct name is "LIttle Butterfly" - not plural. But, there are lots of little butterflies on that rose - very free blooming.

There is so much to learn about roses that I expect I'll be a newbie until I croak. It's a badge of honor, you see.

Thank you harborrose, I tried to respond, but between Garden Web and AOL, I couldn't get through! Little Butterfly has made some very interesting seedlings so far. It imparts good health to its children. I'd be very interested in hearing others experiences with it. Thanks! Kim

Very cool, mashamcl! Thank you! I'm massaging Rayon Butterflies with R. Fedtschenkoana pollen in hopes of combining the two. So far, this is the only seedling to result. I'm watching it to make sure it is a hybrid, but even if it isn't, I like the rose!

What Kim doesn't know is that my 'Lynnie' has grown at least 18" taller and 2' wider than it was when he saw it growing in my garden. I wish I could just let it go to see how large the rose would become in this climate. I had to tip prune it last week to protect it from snow breakage.

What I find so interesting about the performance of this plant is that my climate is so different from Kim's. During the summer I have triple digit temps for weeks at a time. In winter, the day temps are in the 40s with night temps in the teens. Yet, during the rose season, 'Lynnie' is always covered in bloom with dense foliage.

I am glad I gave it enough room to really stretch out. It's glorious in my garden.

Thanks, Lyn, I think it is going to have to be moved next year. It is such a pretty thing that I'd like it to have lots of room.

Kim, I had to look up Rayon Butterflies as the name is so ... different. I loved your description of its name. Very lovely rose, too.

Yes, I do think you will want to move the rose next year. This thread made me go out and measure my 'Lynnie'. It is 5' x 8' after tip pruning for snow.

Wow, Lyn, that's a full foot taller and twice as wide as she's ever been here.

Thank you harborrose, I love "punnish" names. One of my favorite perennials is Grape Knee High. The plant is good here and the name always gives me a chuckle. Cliff Orent (Eurodesert Roses)found a color sport of Rosie O'Donnell which he very aptly named, "Trump Card"! Don't you love it?
