"Social media" when I was a kid ...
Comments (15)I vaguely remember a party line in the home when I was a very small child - maybe 4 or 5 years old. It's funny to me how many countless hours I spent on the phone as a teenager. My girlfriends and I would see each other at school, then be on the phone together in the evening (s-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g that curly phone cord into all kinds of unnatural, elongated shapes). I remember just HANGING on the phone too, not really having anything of consequence to talk about. Maybe watching the same TV show and commenting occasionally. When I had a boyfriend, it was often the same thing. Now I do not enjoy talking on the phone much at all. I DO like to speak with my parents (my mom and I have been known to hold marathon, chatty sessions), but for the most part I am just not comfortable making calls or talking to others that way. I'm not even sure why that is, unless I just got it all out of my system as a teen!...See MoreBlack/White/social media: Kids and our events this week
Comments (11)I think for this and everything, you should help them grapple with how much social media is designed to grab your attention with high impact, high conflict kinds of ideas. Even worse than TV considering how small the screen is of a phone, etc. I seriously don't think this is having a very good impact on people's lives, and I think children should be encouraged to limit their time on social media and live more of real life. I've been involved in social justice almost all my adult life, for me it is more than the meme of the day, and I would hope it would be so for my kids and the kids I mentor. Also hopefully you are living your values so your kids can work through this with you as you are coming to terms with it too. I grew up with race riots happening around me, this is nothing new but no less sad. I had my consciousness raised in the 1960's and what was on TV was awful then too. I still managed to come out of it with passion and hope and that was probably due to my parents encouraging me to reach out to people of different faiths and cultures, and to just be a nice person, period. I was trained to be a "mensch" by my grandparents, which meant to be a nice kind person, despite what was going on around me. The world is full of mensches too, kids need to be made aware of that. All that negative drama is very toxic, I would work pretty hard to keep it out of my home. I know SO and I have to work at it, to not become angry and jaded....See MoreDeath & social media....
Comments (17)I'm sorry about your friend's death but you know, people do what people do. When someone dies, close family and friends usually have more to deal with than to try to find the decedent's phone book and spend the immediate aftermath on the phone calling contacts. It can take awhile. I wouldn't look for things to get upset about. Having said that, I think watchme's "narcissist wonderland" description of social media, especially Facebook, says it all. Many people I know who are Facebook junkies are bored with their lives and it gives them something that passes the time. But in a narcissistic way all the same....See Moresocial media salute
Comments (13)It is amazing how many animals I see going through our nextdoor forum. Every day are posted dogs loose or lost dogs etc. And everyone is so good about trying to locate the owners or the lost dog or cat. It's a positive experience in many cases and we get to meet our neighbors. Very rewarding when we can help an animal. I am not on Facebook but they do have a good lost and found animals section. Other excellent sites are Pawboost.com and petfbi.org. So happy you had a good result. It's a terrible feeling not knowing where they are and if they are safe. It's hard to believe how many of these animals have no identification on them at all and are not chipped. I can't even imagine not having such invaluable life saving inf on my baby. We have actually bought id tags for some of the repeat offenders in the neighborhoods. Even if the owner doesn't care enough we do. Beautiful pup!...See MoreOne Devoted Dame
