poll: if your new home will have carpet...
Comments (13)I agree with those who refuse to pour a ton of extra money into carpeting. We did, 14 years ago, and while I did get a LOT of compliments on the Sculpted Berber that we chose, it's a $%&$@ to vacuum because all the dog hair, lint, crumbs, etc., wants to 'hide' in the sculpt and I've wished for the last 10 years now that the carpet would just evaporate right off the floor and be gone. Heck no, this stuff is going to outlive US, I swear, as 14 years later, it still looks almost brand new even though it's a very light 'stone' color. Luckily we're moving away from IT instead, building another home, and while I have nothing against Berber in general, we did opt for Frieze this time as a change of pace. Actually, we're doing a combination of Porcelain tile in the Foyer, Kitchen & Baths, Laminate in the Dining Room, Office and Workout Room, and then Frieze in the remaining Bedrooms, Family Room and Living Room. It's a heck of a lot softer than Berber, but I kinda/sorta agree with whoever it was that said that it reminded her hubby of the outdated Shag. I'm hoping that I'll like this!...See MoreWhat % of your house value did you spend on your kitchen remodel?
Comments (90)@Janie it's a funny disparity, but my husband drives home from work every day in his $3700 car, wearing a $7000 watch (company gift for length of service) and when our kitchen is finally finished, he will walk in and make himself a coffee on a machine that doesn't cost a car payment, it cost almost as much as the CAR. Our total expense, hopefully around $30k, will be a title less than 15% of the current value of our home. We're in the Houston burbs, so pretty low COL. Ours is mostly DIY, but wth lots of structural changes. We put about 1/3 of our budget in plumbing and electrical. We knew the espresso setup would be $3k. And I knew I wanted 2 ovens and Marmoleum for the floor. We worked everything else around that, including getting our cabinets from Craigslist and then 16' of counter from ikea clearance for under $100 We got married in our backyard, my youngest daughter was born upstairs, and we love the neighborhood and neighbors and schools and we're about 15 minutes from most of my family. Unless we have to relocate, we're not going anywhere. We used the 15% number as a guide to not overimorive for the neighborhood. I wouldn't have thought a minimum was really applicableto any kitchen though. Because there's so much variation in what needs to be done. Some kitchens might need new counters and a coat of paint. Ours required rebuilding 3 load bearing walls....See MoreWhat are you most proud of accomplishing for your home this year?
Comments (53)I got the garage and window/door trim on my little ranch-style home scraped, primed, and repainted, as well as the deck! Did I mention that I hate painting outside? The garage also got completely insulated and sheathed with OSB; it isn't painted and looks a little rough, but keeps the space 10 degrees warmer than it used to before insulating! Oh, and l painted two small houses--interior painting this time!--for a friend who has rentals. No more painting for me for a little while, but l still have plenty of projects to do: redoing my raised garden beds in the back yard, finishing the laundry room(original basement concrete walls only on two sides), and figuring out how to make my kitchen work and feel larger without building on! I have lots of ideas and wish l had the money to go with them!...See MoreJust for fun, what do you love but would never have in your own home?
Comments (78)In my new home, I have a housekeeper come every other week. I like clean homes. I do NOT like the actual job of cleaning them. I'd rather work in the garden, or do some cooking, or deal with the chickens, or keep up with physical maintenance and house painting/staining, or do graphic arts or anything else. I'm fine with doing laundry, too. I clean up after myself in the kitchen, but the housekeeper does floors, bathrooms and general dusting/windows and such. And I now have a robot vacuum who is pretty decent at what he does. He even has a name: Sharkey. I'm not crazy about cleaning his filter, but it comes with the territory and lasts five minutes... I didn't have a housekeeper back at my old CT home. One reason my getting out of there and getting the place on the market is taking so long... especially since I then had a full time job that lasted well over the standard 40 hour work week. THIS one will be clean! But it doesn't need to be anally-House Beautiful clean. Simply lived in and tidy. My reasons for not wanting a fully white kitchen or other rooms are not about appearing clean, but about my just only wanting white as an accent. Aesthetically. That's what works for my sense of eye appeal....See MoreJoanna
