Updating Mid Century Modern Stone
Comments (8)Leave the stone and design everything to work with the home's original design. A Mid Century home is a valuable commodity. Don't take away that value by removing what made it desirable. It should still say 1966 very clearly, with only an occasionally identifiable 2017 element. That is why having a good architect involved in a renovation is important. The addition should look like it was always there, attached to the original home. It shouldn't look like you tore the house down and build a 2017 NeoEcclectic in its place. Or worse, like you attached a whole different house to it....See MoreHelp - Curb Appeal/Updates needed for Mid Century Modern House
Comments (16)Remove the meatballs and amateur garden center retaining walls in favor of one single low horizontal retaining wall. Pick a material that relates to the exterior choices. Matching brick if you could. Cot-ten steel possibly. The wall should have a decent horizontal space between it and the street where some larger scaled pots and concrete jigsaw puzzle blocking “garden” with some heavy “sculptures” can shine. Look at the standard blockade pot planting’s meant to keep vehicles from ramming public buildings. You will need an expert to design this, and implement it. Maybe Phase 1 is Design, and Phase 2 is Implement. The smaller space between the top of the wall and building can be actual planting’s, but mostly drought resistant grasses and maybe some very low growing junipers. The building is a STAR, and needs to be more revealed than hidden by landscaping. Also think about a rooftop terrace and garden if it’s flat. Would be cool to see a hint of green in the sky peeking over like a secret paradise....See Moremid century modern update
Comments (21)I would probably paint the under part the same as the accent siding you go with (if you keep the brick), like the first photo. In one of the photos that under part matches the window trim...in one it’s white...it’s really up to you and what you like. Not sure what colors they are using in the above photos. But this looks close to your brick? and might help give you a starting point. (Not a pro). if iron ore is too dark, SW urbane bronze below is a nice color too. I’ve been looking into that one to go with my terra-cotta roof....See MoreSiding ideas for mid century modern that's been "updated"?
Comments (7)Waht a mess . I love MCM ranch style homes . I own one and they are IMO the perfect design for an exterior not to mention the great living space sizes. The drawing you show is that your architect now desgning this home ot the actual real original drawings? I like what is shown in those drawings IMO stop choosing anything until you figure out what is being done to hopefully bring the house back to what it should be and IMO that is not modern farmhouse .I need to have you tell us what you want from this house and how much money you want to spend. I do not agree it should be stucco . This is one of my faves for MCM landscaping and it also has the style of garge door and front door that woudl work for you. Please save for a bit to do this right. I do agree vertical siding but that gable has to go.If that is the LR on the left that window should be made larger. I live where we get tons of snow maybe every 5 yrs or so we need to shovel the roof but I would never change the roof style since it is such an itegral part of the house style....See MoreCreative Visual Concepts, Kevin Strader
