Help me with window treatments please!

I have a open concept dining/living room/kitchen area with 5 windows that are all different. As you’ll see in the photos, the kitchen window is square. There are two small rectangular windows on the West-facing wall flanking the fireplace with exposed oak trim. There is a bay window on the front facing wall in the living area also with oak trim, as well as a more standard window with white trim.

I’m not sure what to do as far as window treatments! We live on a hill so there isn’t much view into our windows. Blinds and/or curtains would be mostly esthetic and to cover the windows in the dark so anyone approaching the house can’t see completely in.

I am thinking or perhaps Roman shades on the small windows, a natural wood blind on the kitchen, and white linen curtains with thin black rods for the bay window and the dining room window. But I don’t know! I am not experienced with this. Ideas welcome!

Hi JJ!

Actually, you seem like you have a pretty good handle on your window treatment ideas. I like them! Just a couple of pointers and suggestions:
- Depending on where your fireplace wall and kitchen windows are in relationship to each other, you may want them all to match as either the natural wood or roman shades. If they’ve got plenty of visual separation, you’re fine to do the two different styles.
- Make sure to spend some time looking at how the kitchen wood blind coordinates with your cabinet wood. More contrast (a darker wood on the blind) would probably be better since you likely won’t match the cabinets exactly.
- You can cheat the kitchen and fireplace treatments a little higher to give an illusion of more height. The shades need to be a little wider than the outside of the trim and you can’t raise them above the top of the window glass itself. Then you’ll create the illusion properly.
- Hang the living and dining room rods near the ceiling and level with each other. The curtains should go all the way to the floor. Again, creating an illusion of more height.
Overall though, trust your instincts! I think your ideas will work well with your decor.

The bedroom ones are "pole top panels" can i hang those with rings? JCPenny shows pole top panels hanging from rings and clips. However, I wouldn't do it, because I fear that there isn't enough structure at the top of the fabric to prevent it from sagging between the rings over time. I find that what you see in photos often doesn't work in real life. Tab top drapes look beautiful in catalog photos, curving in and out, but in real life they tend to droop. The rod we wanted to buy is one of those big carved wood things that aren't adjustable. I would also need to buy it in a 8' width. Window is 78.5". 8' is 96". so it would hang over the sides 8.75". Is this alright?? I know it will give the illusion of a wider window but if i tie back the curtains will it look funny? That actually isn't much of an overhang. I have an 84 inch wide window and the rod extends 1.5 feet beyond each side. As for the tie-back, it depends on how much fabric there is to pull back.

Break this down into two steps to make it easier. Tackle function first. Don't worry about a valance until after you live with the shade for a while. Get dressed and go to the stores and play with their displays. Find one that give you privacy, but also works with your fan. The valance is just fluff and you might decide that with your clean lines that you don't want one. The pleated shades that Daisy mentioned sounds just like what you need. Even a nice tailored pulldown sounds great with your Shaker-style furniture.

By cafe curtains, do you mean the tiered set? I'm just not sure what that means? I always think of kitchen curtains! How would I mount a curtain rod from the ceiling? I once had regular curtain rods before I put in the seat, but with the roller shades, there is no place to put the rod hooks. I don't want to block off the windows as in the first photos-I mostly need to be able to block the extreme sunlight and provide some evening privacy if needed.
