Neglected orchid going to bloom - i think?
Comments (1)Yep, that appears to be a spike on the left. If it were mine, I'd cut the old spike about 1/2" up form the bottom, move the stake to the left side and slowly (starting with the upper 1/3rd of the spike), slowly start bending the spike to an upwards position using twist ties or clips to hold it to the stake. I'd also consider leaning the stake initially and slowly moving it more upright as the spike can handle the bending. In my experience, you can get that spike to grow more upright like the old one, but you have to be very careful and do it in very small 'steps'. BTW: At this point don't turn the plant or the blooms may get confused about which way to open. (It appears it hasn't been turned much lately anyhow). Good growing and good luck, Bob...See MoreI Think My Brassavola Nodosa Is Going To Bloom
Comments (1)I don't have a photo but I will describe it. Start at the very top of the leaf, the point, and follow the crease down about 2/3rd of the way to where it meets the top of the bulb. That's where the spike comes from. Not at the base of the plant but about 1/3 of the way up at the base of the leaf....See MoreI think my phal is dying....
Comments (25)There is/was nothing wrong with that phal that some consistent care wouldn't fix. The roots looked just a little too green to me and indicate a consistent high moisture situation, fine if you have the light to deal but from the shadows outside I am thinking a northeastish location and no supplemental light? Not ideal, especially for a plant that is starting off from a waterlogged situation. Just as there has been rampant overuse of antibiotics in the human healthcare theatre leading to the current crisis of drug resistant infections, if we orchidists dump fungicides on every case of overwatering we will one day reach a point where these products will not have any efficacy. It also does not help that the plant was unpotted out of the sphag. Sphag was not the problem and in an indoor situation in Zone 6 a nice water retentive mix like sphag is a good thing actually. Provided the light levels are consistent enough to promote rapid drying, and they could be without too much trouble. H...See MoreHelp! I think my Phal needs some 'tough love'
Comments (4)Hi Molie, here's what I would do 1. Remove. The spikes they are almost done blooming anyway. 2. Remove all dead brown roots, not needed. 3. Give the roots a wash nder the sink(don't get water in the crown) then rince with some hydrogen peroxide. Get a smaller pot that can hold the roots comfortable. Repot using a mix for phals. Keep in a little lower light for a few weeks also water just enough to keep the mix moist. Since your going to put it in a pot and not a mount, you can place the orchid stright and upright, if it does not do so comfortably you can always use one of the stakes the bloom were tied to to hold it in place. I hope this helps. At lest this is what I would do. Velleta....See MoreBlueberryBundtcake - 6a/5b MA
