My first box will appear Tuesday. I may move this to Wednesday if this allows me to make some choices (within my rural zip code region). I doubt it will, but we shall see. Looking forward to this! I just hope I don't have to make lots of mirepoix to deal with carrots - my least favorite item in the veggie world. But if nothing else, the chickens will be happy. (Same if there is too much of any one item - I'm a single person after all!)

Artemis, after my first shipment I have been able to pick what I want. So far we have gotten a little of a lot of stuff, if that makes sense. 2 of this, 3 of that, 1 of something else. I think the most of any one thing we've gotten besides small handfuls of potatoes, was 4 Opal apples (I recommend them, DH who doesn't eat much fruit says they are very tasty.) I'm still trying to figure out though what they think I can do with just 1 turnip LOL. (I'll pick up a few more at the store next week.)

Edie, Roast the turnip with other root vegetables, including the carrots Artemis doesn't like, either oiled or with chicken on top. If they included turnip greens, my favorite way is chopped and cooked with the greens.

I'm on the fence about trying this. My husband hates most vegetables, but he does like most fruit. I, on the other hand, love all vegetables, not too fond of kale.

ETA: If it is only a few of each thing, that might work.

The turnip was sans greens but the beets had lovely greens very much like big Swiss Chard. They made a very tasty addition to our chicken minestrone soup last night. The nice thing is the chance to try lots of new things without a lot of commitment. And if you don't like it you can cancel after the first box. Every box is about 1/2 & 1/2 fruits and veggies so something for everyone!

Small box every other week. Usually 2-3 pears, 2-3 apples, one grapefruit or a couple oranges...enjoyed a mango a couple weeks ago.

Not much different than our past usual grocery lists. We make a small fruit salad most weekends for a few days work-week breakfasts. (I have garden blueberries and raspberries in the freezer). Yogurt/granola. Weekends usually eggs various ways.

I grow a variety of beet just for the greens. They grow all season taking the outer leaves. At the end of the season I get a few dozen baby beets!.

DH does most of the grocery shopping. No longer head scratching deciding on produce. This box is ALL organic so no shifting back and forth looking for what looks good.

Needed a quick meal last night. Two collard leaves, sliced thin, the rest of the acorn squash, half red onion, (forgot about celery)...the fresh veg simmered as the frozen turkey/white bean soup thawed in the pot. Slice of homemade frozen boule for croutons.

10 minute prep....30 minute simmer, croutons in the oven...

I mentioned switching to once a week mid-march through April. House guests, etc. Garden will just be started here but not much produce. EastCoast southern gardens/farms far ahead of us. By 4-6 weeks at least.

Then cancel/hiatus when my garden is in full swing.

I've not paid much attention but the list has changed. (I made my selections last Thursday) for this weeks delivery.

Looks promising. Remember if you don't like something, save for stock. I made a bone/chicken/veg stock last week using bones from the freezer and lots of misfit veg. And a veg only stock for a soup.

Leeks are on the list. The tops are full of flavor in a stock. I used the rest of the acorn squash, the butt end of celery and the top 4 inches, root end of parsnip, and a big radish end, slices of ginger, aromatics, a carrot.

Stock cooks down after about 45 min on a simmer. No need to cover the ingredients with water 'to cover'...it will cook down...=richer stock. Even a chicken breast, a couple boneless skinless chicken things, a pork chop, ...will braise in the broth added after an hour and simmer/braise done in 45 min. Take the protein out and simmer the stock whatever time you have.

If you don't think you usually like something, use the root end, top cut, save for stock. Roast the 'meat' center veg with other cubed veg. You just might be surprised how good they are roasted. (in stock a un-liked veg will never be detected but the food value will still be present)

Just received my first box last Thursday. I am very happy with what I received. The tomatoes are ripening and are delicious. The green pepper was a tad less fresh than I would have picked but I used it right away and it was fine.

2 LARGE turnips

5 tangerines, two of which are squishy and probably no longer any good.

1 small grapefruit.

1 small bunch kale

1 regular bunch radish (the greens will go to the chickens)

1 large and 4 small carrots. I may use a couple, the rest will go to chickens.

4 blue potatoes, small to medium

1 container cherry tomatoes (red and yellow)

6 mini bell peppers.

3 pears. I think Bosc.

I’m really happy with most of this shipment – I did expect carrots even though that is the one veggie I don’t care for (though I am happy to cook it into mirepoix). Two of those tangerines are super squishy, and unfortunately I can’t feed them to the chickens. The kale looks really good. I was out of red onions, so this was very welcome. I prefer Anjou pears over Bosc, but I can still cook with them.

I will be blunt and firm. Both those boxes need a head of roamesco and/or winter squash or a fresh lettuce head, leeks. Still good but missing the mark. Good pantry staples, good exceptional flavor over standard produce.

I'm not at all giving up but one box was over the top serving many side dishes. The last box was decent pantry staples.

Mixed fruit does keep us in weekly fruit salads, a bit of granola, yogurt. Good breakfasts. Best grapefruit ever.

Looks good! I would report the 2 squishy tangerines and they will probably toss in a couple of extra the next box. Now that you've gotten your first box, you should be able to choose what you want from their list of available produce. The bags that peppers, green beans, etc come in are biodegradable and can be put in a compost pile. Enjoy!

Both those boxes look good to me, here in Michigan in the middle of all that white stuff and the garden catalogs next to my chair!

I would also complain about the tangerines, hopefully they'll make it "right", thereby proving their customer service!

Artemis, double score on the blue potatoes, I was just reading (maybe in Prevention?) that the blue potatoes have a bazillion antioxidants that are good for everything from preventing colon cancer to reducing inflammation. Gotta be the blue ones, though, white ones don't have those compounds. I grew them one year, they made the strangest looking mashed potatoes!

I'm still hoping they'll come to my area, eventually.

Todays box is out for delivery. So exciting, lol. Did a freezer inventory so whatever is in it will be great. Salmon, oxtail, shrimp/scallops, home ground beef, broths, mushroom ragout, 1/2 dozen soup pints. garden tom sauces.

Made a soup last night cleaning out the crisper. Still a few this-n-that left from the last box but this will be welcomed. Three day weekend and should not need to grocery shop at all. (forgot about the oxtail) and the arancini.

My 1st box came last Thurs and I'm on the bi-weekly schedule, so I'm wondering... For those who have been given some choice, when did that happen?

If your box came last Thursday, late this afternoon should be when the list is released. You have until, I think, Saturday afternoon to finalize your choices. They will charge your card on Sunday for next Thursday's shipment. I am looking forward this afternoon to see what my choices are!

I made stuffed peppers with black beans this morning, and used one of the pears and one of the onions in it. Radish greens and two carrots (sorry about my non-preference of carrots) headed down to the chicken coop, but I will be reserving the rest of the carrots for mirepoix. As soon as I finish up the other half of a previously-purchased grapefruit, I will try theirs. Radishes and cherry tomatoes are wonderful in salads. (Although they sent no salad greens, I already had/have a bunch here, so just as well.) And the kale gets steamed for dinner tonight.

I will (next week, as I am out of town for the weekend) make mashed potatoes with the blues and with my remaining Yukon golds that I grew myself this past season. I'm considering adding in the smaller turnip to the dish.

I'm roasting tonight. Barely made a dent in all the veg...all fantastic flavor. Had beans and snap peas raw snacking. Salmon and mixed grain.

I don't have issues with dis-likes at all. We are less likely to enjoy replacements like cauliflower for rice or spaghetti squash for any noodle. Yet add more veg with any dish as well as any small portion of noodle/grain/rice/seed...if that makes sense.

Why we most often have a mixed grain or veg. Carrots on a plate with a protein...not so much. A mixed roast we enjoy all of it. Variety.

If you hate celery, read no further. Just started my Spring root celery. Organic is perfect for this. A two inch root end will make a gorgeous summer season plant. In about a week it will sprout. in a glass container...no need for sunlight. Just change the water every 4-5 days.

In 5-6 weeks pot it up in an herb pot. No need for a garden. Just a sunny pot on a deck.

I tried to start celery once and it was an abysmal failure so I thought it was it was just me and never tried again. May have to give it another go!

So the new stalks come off the sides of the cut root?

I am so trying the celery trick. Between Mirepoix, Holy Trinity, and oyster dressing and what ever else it is called, I use so much celery.

Southern, Mexican, Cajun, French, Italian, etc, it seems like almost everything I cook has some version of celery and onion, with various other things added.

I have to chop it very small to get it past the celery inspector, (my husband), LOL.

Nope. Straight up the center. I have two started at the moment. And a leek. Just sitting in one inch of water. Kitchen counter next to the sink, (ledge just above). No direct sun. Roots start forming in about a week. Even if the 'root end' looks completely flat and brownish. The new growth will look like a small head of flat-leaf parsley. Like the pic above.

I change the water every couple days or when I think do do so. As the head forms I pull off the outer 'stalky' side bits. They tend to get slimy but rinse off fine. Usually 3 out of five do really well.

Here is a pic. The one circled is maybe three days. Starting to pop. The left I just put in yesterday. The leek on the right, meh, they never do much but do grow up nice and tender 12-16 inches. Picked up this container in a thrift store. Don't mean to be so picky but don't like 'junk' in my kitchen...this is minimal enough. When they form leafy heads I pull off the outer stalk ends and push the good ones together, then add another...

By 'junk' I mean yogurt containers and egg cartons for seed starting, etc. Glass you can glance it and see if it needs attention.

I have a seed starting room downstairs for that mess.

Like said, I'll most likely toss the leek but just filling the container space until the next celery. Green onion does ok but a big bunch of that is 50 cents here....

Last season three did well so two went up front in the ornamental beds with sage, mint, rosemary...the best one on the deck just outside the kitchen. Herb pots.

The stalks never get much bigger than a chopstick but intense flavor so use less and the leaves are fantastic. Lasts all summer in my NY climate. Chopped fine it is easy to hide in everything. We love celery!

Green onions are 89 cents a bunch here, which sounds cheap, but I only need one or two before they go bad. However, I can throw a cheap pack of seeds in a pot and they will last forever.

ETA: I like "Evergreen Long White Bunching". They are an heirloom and very cheap and grow well here in 7a/b North Alabama.

Somehow, a wire got crossed, and I got a second box this week. They're supposed to come every other week.

I'll work on rectifying this but meanwhile, my new acquisitions are:

A huge buttload of kale (a different variety than the last one).

More celery than I can shake a stick at, but I do know some will go into a mirepoix this coming Thursday.

Just to note, I was also away up to Vermont most of this past weekend, so even less of the food from the first box got eaten. I do have to have them fix the sending parameters!

I've had veg fresh from 3 weeks ago still lovely. Kinda tell what needs to be used asap or 2-3 days. Last box was killer fresh. It is Tuesday...box delivered last Thursday ...still doing mixed veg. One box past I knew to use right away. No issues now.

Lived in NewOrleans years ago so can use green peppers in a 'trinity' when needed but don't like them at all. I use only poblanos instead. Better substitute better flavor.

I just realized we haven't had the yellow beets yet ... Guess that will be our accompaniment tonight!

My yellow/golden beets did not have the green tops but that is cool-io. Roast, add fresh to slaw...match-sticked. Beets are a root crops that lasts a few weeks in the crisper fridge...great raw and roasted.

Ordered a gift card for one Misfits box for son who lives in NYC. His apartment building does not have a safe delivery for packages, but he can get it delivered at work. I wanted to order one for his brother, but they don't deliver to California. Hope our youngest likes this idea.

Nice gift!....reminds me to do that for my parents.

Another pic of the rooting veg. Nice thing about glass and near the sink I am reminded to tend them. Thirsty! Gave a rinse, pulled off a few outer stalk bits from the first big one. Fit in a green onion end bunch. All are popping up...

If too early to plant in a couple weeks when 6-8inches tall I will use as garnish but keep rooting more until warmer temps.

Sleevendog, I need to try that for my son who loves to grow things in his garden. If you grow celery, can you just cut off a few stalks to use and let the plant continue to grow in the soil?

The pic posted above, the big plant, nearly 3 ft tall and 2 and 1/2 wide was planted early spring and was harvested all summer up until Thanksgiving. Cutting 3-5 thin stalks with leaves as needed. Starting from a good organic root end. The harvested stalks are not like store bought...about the size of a chopstick but used similar.

I also grow par-cel...a parsley that has a celery flavor. I do grow 'traditional' celery where you plant a row deep, then cover up with soil/clean peat or coir as it grows. Then get 8-12 decent plants all at the same time. The deck potted plant right outside the kitchen is celery for months. Just needs rooting time indoors.

I’m feeling veggie-deprived, was on a snowboarding vacation and skipped last week. Biweekly so I’ve got time to kill. Loved the golden beets in my last order and the kids agreed that they’re edible. We’re up to three edible veggies now, up from one before starting misfits. Progress.

I need to try some of this indoor growing. Been saying that for almost a year now though.

The nice thing about the golden beets is that they don't turn everything on your plate purple!

Well, I can see that this wouldn't work for me. I can see eight to nine different things he would not touch and I can't eat that much before it spoils.
