It'll be a PITA to access with sliding windows. For window boxes, it's either ground level or you get swing-in windows.

They’re not sliding. I thought I would open the windows from the inside and water.

You'd definitely need easy access for watering, deadheading, etc. I've never had them on a second story, but it does seem like extra work. You could just place pots with saucers under them in the window boxes and remove them for watering. Again, kind of a hassle doing it up there. We used those long planter 'troughs' to place inside the window boxes at our previous home. They came with long trays underneath to catch the water. I know you can get window boxes that are more water safe. Ours were wood with plastic liners, but we still had the trays under the troughs.

Not. It wouldn't make sense on the second story windows. If you're going to do it at all, then do it on the first story windows.

sunny, try an online search for "second story window box tips." You might find something that would be do-able for you.

If you don't mind tending to the plants and they're easily accessible, then do it. I'm not so sure it will make the windows look any longer. My concern is that it may be too much with the bottom boxes. Once you're landscaping is in, those smaller windows may not even bother you. I would suggest painting the current window boxes to match your windows. They seem to blend in with the house.

Only with faux plants. Watering 2x a day in August heat gets really really old.

What would really help is something other than the depressing Goth look you’ve got going on. As in some COLOR.

I have second story windows in front of sliding windows. I have no problem watering them. I love window boxes! So I vote Yes. I do like Denita's idea of a bright door color and you definitely need some foundation planting. But that wasn't your question, so forgive us for the unsolicited advice. As for faux plants - I've never seen any that didn't look FAKE. How often you will have to water, depends on the exposure and climate. If you are not in the south and the windows don't get full sun all day, you shouldn't have to water every day. If you want to minimize the need to water, go with succulents. I would not use black window boxes. I think a lighter color (white or whatever you choose to paint the door) would look better. And the soil in a black box will heat up and cook the roots of your plants.

Yes. What’s more cute on a little cottage than flower boxes? I’d do stained wood boxes with colorful flowers.

Some additional thoughts about second floor window boxes. As I mentioned in my previous comment, I have 2. One is at the height of my waist if I am standing inside in front of the window and has no furniture in front of it. That one is a snap to water and tend. The other is a little higher and has shelving in front of it. So for that one, I have to use a little step ladder and reach over the shelving. Deadheading is a bigger chore for me than watering. So either pick plants that will continue to bloom without deadheading, or commit yourself to that task. Stained wood might be pretty, so long as it is not too dark and then I'd replace the door with a wood one. I'd also get lighter/brighter pots for the front entry area.
