Comments (75)I'm reading all the posts, even when I'm not responding by typing, I am thinking about you all and praying for you when needed, like EG's daughter needs especially right now. As for worrying about the spirituality of others, well, all we can do is be an example and pray for them. I know in my home that it has made a world of difference when I get closer to the Lord... that's all we can do as it's their decision about their own walk... As for spirits, those that call on Jesus name can kick the BUTT out of anything that isn't off God... try that and see! We made a nasty spirit leave our current home... most people would have called it a ghost. It scared the crap out me for a long time, our tenants (before we moved in the home ourselves, we had rented it) gave us some really scary stories, too, but regardless they HAVE to flee, but ONLY IN JESUS NAME). (Okay, now that everyone thinks I'm crazier than before, I'll change the subject...) Hannah just finished her second week (2 days a week) of tennis. The scar on her leg is mostly healed except at the bottom, but it looks like it's going to turn into a callus... not sure if that's good or bad, but sounds good to me right now... I may still have to go to Dallas to get an adjustment on her prosthesis. I can't blame you, Granny, for wanting to be there for a little bit after the baby is born. You keep standing your ground, girl! Well, I gotta run for now, so I'll check back and try to finish reading the posts... Blessings, Angela...See MoreOT: Best Place to Live Upstate?
Comments (67)I am wondering if the original poster moved up here or no? I've lived in Canton and Potsdam. If you can't work for the colleges, it will be rough to get a decent job. Negative 40 in the winter at times but not cooler in the summer unless you get into higher elevation in the 'Dacks. Very inexpensive housing, good apartments are hard to find since all the college kids get them. Flat flat flat, unless you go up to Russell and all the little tiny towns at the foot of the mountains where it starts getting hillier. The Adirondacks have a nice feel to them but yes, there are very poor "North Country" people there. I don't know how "colonial" or "New Englandy" the towns are up there. Ogdensburg, Watertown and Massena are larger cities that have more things going on. I agree with previous posters that Corning/Painted Post is a nice area with culture and Big Flats has the mall and lots of shopping. There are smaller towns in between all the larger cities, everything is rural. Bath, Hammondsport, Penn Yan are great areas too. Hammondsport was awarded Coolest Small Town. The Finger Lakes Area is one of the most beautiful areas; the lakes, wineries, small town feel are wonderful. Houses on the lakes are very pricey but out in the country they are very reasonable. They HAVE to be because there are barely any jobs or opportunities here. Most people who own the lake houses have these as summer homes and travel from the big cities. Buffalo, Rochester, Ithaca, Syracuse are larger and have more things available and you don't have to drive far to get back to the country with hills and farms. Actually between Buffalo and Rochester is a nice stretch of farms, farmer's markets, nice countryside. I grew up near Jamestown which is all the way west. Nice town but poor, again not many good jobs but there is a mall there, stores. Chatauqua Lake is also there and it's beautiful, as well as Chatauqua Institution which is well known for its summer cultural events. It's less than an hour to Erie, PA: lots of shopping, jobs and Lake Erie with beaches. A little east outside Jamestown are the Allegany Mountains which are neat. Anytime you are in rural areas, you will have hunting. Some people are so poor that they have to hunt to have food on the table. I hate hunting but it's something you just have to deal with here. Steuben County is extremely poor and there are trailers around, especially if you go way out into the countryside, but there are lots of nice houses too. Teens are always around, carrying on, but it's not a problem. Angelica is a sweet little town but you will have to drive a ways to get to a big store. Sometimes you just have to drive, visit and see how it makes you feel. You could always rent a house and then really travel all over to find the perfect spot. I haven't been to all of the towns that have been mentioned, but I never have felt the "New England" feeling in any of them. I have been to Lake Champlain but only once and just passing through so maybe it has more of that feeling....See MoreOT I live in the DFW area closer ...
Comments (8)wc, I'd still do due diligence, even with a realtor's referral. They do have a database of great resources, but sometimes the realtor may not have personal knowledge. Builders and contractors are another good source of referrals that I have used in the past. I'll share my horror story so you can see why I'm now more cautious. One realtor in a previous location recommended, and had used once in his own home, a certified and bonded handyman company that was in his office database. As it turned out, I relied on his referral and contracted directly with the subcontractors who worked for my realtor as they had also done work for the former owner of our home. My project was far more complex, but this couple seemed to have worked out well for them. It was a horrible situation that cost us several thousand dollars with no recourse unless I chose to contact the police. I did not as I had no real evidence, but had only overheard them make arrangements with a family member to use a key to enter another home. It seemed from the conversation I overheard, they intended for the sister to enter surreptitiously and steal. Evidently, they had copied the key from a job in another town that they had worked the previous year. I suspected this type of operation was a regular thing with them, but it frightened me to think that I had them in our home for a few weeks already. Whenever the wife asked me a few times for a key, I had refused thankfully. After hearing what sounded like an illegal scheme, I terminated the relationship the next time they showed up as I was also becoming very dissatisfied with their work. But since I had no proof of their ill intent or knowledge of whose house may have been targeted, I did not contact the police. Of course, I let the realtor know so he could have them removed from his firm's referral list. IMO a personal recommendation from someone who has used a person for a few years is the best way to go. If your realtor has that relationship with a housekeeper great, but I'll no longer rely on a firm's referral. If you belong to any type of organization, that would be my preference for referrals especially if you will not be home to supervise....See Moredcarch7 d c f l a s h 7 @ y a h o o . c o m
