Nice space. I would stick with a sectional and use two armchairs where you currently have one. Look for a solid wood coffee table that is larger so it's in better proportion to the sectional. For the sectional, look for a color that works with your artwork - maybe a camel colored leather or emerald green fabric. You might consider painting just the backs of your shelving around the fireplace in a deeper color.

I like your chair. Depending upon what you purchase, consider keeping in living room and re-upholstering.

Thanks for those suggestions. I have never thought about painting the bookshelves, so I'll consider that. Calidesign, I'm curious about sectional versus couch and loveseat - why did you recommend the sectional? If I can fit 2 chairs in, in addition to the couches/sectional, should they match? And does anyone have thoughts about rugs or lamps?

I almost never suggest a sectional over a sofa and chairs, but in your case, I think the sectional with a chaise like you currently have is perfect in your space. It looks so comfortable and welcoming. It's hard to find super comfortable, deep, sofas. You could use a long sofa though, with an armchair on either side facing in, or two armchairs next to each other with their backs to the window. I would get two matching chairs. If you use that configuration you could still keep your wood framed chair where it is currently. I would place a floor lamp on the far end of the sectional near the window, and a table lamp on an end table or small library floor lamp on the other sectional end. Choose all your furniture before you decide on a rug.

I agree with Calidesign-I don't love sectionals either but love the way it looks in your space. This Article sofa would be a nice option to keep with your midcentury style.

I had been thinking a change might be nice - hence chairs/couch v sectional. But with that encouragement, I'll at least keep considering a replacement sectional. I hadn't heard of Article before - any comments about quality? Good to know that it's wise to choose the rug last. I have a hard time with rugs, and don't have a good intuitive sense for what will look good. So I'm happy to put that decision off for a bit. Are there any rules of thumb on sizing of coffee table relative to couch? I was thinking that round or oval might be nice to balance out all the angles in the room. I do like that surfboard style though

i love your sectional !! looks so great in your place. but with the grid seams basically impossible to clean. maybe no tufting on your next sectional, and zippers on seats and backs, so covers can easily be removed for cleaning or even replacement if needed.

I would use a rectangular or square coffee table for the most function. You could use a round end table or a softly patterned rug without any geometric angles if you want to soften the look.
