The rug is not big enough anyway and IMO really does not work with the dining set. I would get some art for the black wall and I would not do white drapes in that space . What was the reasoning behind the weird colored hood? BTW you do not space under the table for a properly sized rug since you need the rug to be at least 3’ all around the table to allow chairs to sit on the rug when pulled out. I think black silk drapes would be nice on the window and the art can be huge on that wall .

A few people have said that the traditional look of the dining set is competing with the boho vibe of the rug and I kind of agree but wonder if there is a way to tie those two together.

For the dark grey wall I was planning on finding either art or a giant round mirror with a gold finish to bring in the chandelier colour to the wall.

I’m not sure what you mean by the reasoning for the weird colour hood? Maybe ask it in a different way. The photo is pixelated due to what Houzz’s app does to uploaded images. The hood is a custom wood stained piece. It’s not painted it’s stained with a cool toned bronzy stain that plays well with the gold hardware in the space.

3 feet around the table? My house is 2,100 square feet. We use the dining area to host bigger dinner parties 4-5 times a year. When the house plans were designed we made sure the square footage was put in the most common used areas. The space is fine IMO but I’m just used to working with tighter spaces I guess and I’m totally happy with that.

Black silk drapes is definitely no where close to being my style.

Is the wall black or blue? I can see that you like red as an accent color. Is this room right by the kitchen? Maybe sort of replicate the pattern of the tile work in the carpet? Some BIG art on that accent wall would be the bomb!

I kind of like the rug (that comes in larger size) with the room, but only as long as there is some other relevance colorwise to the room. I am not too good at this, but maybe even a red (ish) bowl or flower on the table? I think your kitchen is beautiful.

Having 2-3 feet behind a dining chair is ideal, but if you don't have it, you don't have it. Keep in mind that your dining set will not be centered on the rug. If you don't use this one, look for rugs with no, or not well defined borders. I think a Bokhara would look beautiful. Try scooting the table a bit away from the wall. I know the chandelier would not be exactly centered but you might not notice. I really don't think you should try to boho the room just to accommodate the rug when you could easily find another not so boho rug. Especially since your home does not seem boho. Regarding the mirror. That would be the easy way out, but I think it would look ho hum and like a million other dining rooms. If you really want mirrors, look for a unique sculptural wall art mirror. But I think your room would benefit from beautiful artwork. You could do brass frames. And, I doubt Patricia would have commented on your range hood had she seen the other photo, to be fair, it doesn't look great in this photo. Good luck with your room!

I think the rug is absolutely marvelous. You just to figure out where you want to position your table and chairs and decide if you have room for a rug.

If you are going to get another rug that is larger, do try to get a genuine hand-knotted wool one of quality, either a tribal design or a Persian.

They really aren't expensive, they wear well and they last forever unless you have a crazy cat, and those rugs are classic and go with every style of furniture and decor.

There is nothing "boho" about a hand knotted oriental rug, none of which are made in Bohemia and are not "hippy" or whatever the term boho is supposed to refer to.

Red is a wonderful color in a dining room, it stimulates both conversation and the appetite, which is exactly what you want.

Assuming you are keeping that dark color wall, I would not choose art that has so much dark color in it.

If you are going to have a very color saturated rug such as the one you are showing us then you can pick art that is black and white (if your wall is black) , but more white than black, and pick up some of the colors from the rug in the flowers or live plants on your table.

This is a coleus, a great plant for indoors because it has very modest light requirements.

Or you could pick art that is black and white with a touch of red.

Another thing for you to think about is that wall is huuuge, and the art pieces you have shown us are rather small and tight.

You can make a great statement with two very big pieces that have movement.

Something like Kandinsky's dancers.

And in fact, you can just draw them on the wall yourself and then paint them as a mural.

Or, if you are not going to use a brightly colored rug, you can get a black and white rug, and do wildly colored murals on the wall a la Kandinsky's circles.

Then if you want to go really wild, there are the peel and stick wall murals of all types, here is one of an old Dutch master, imagine the impact of those vivid colors in your black and white room!

You will have so much fun!!

I can't tell from the angle of the camera if it would work, but have you tried the table turned the opposite way under the light fixture?

Your kitchen looks gorgeous...some people just can't seem to help making rude and unnecessary comments. Not very professional at all.

I am really liking the more recent suggestions. Loodab's examples work well in my eyes.

Another thing that should inform your choices is your china.

If it is a very elaborate, multicolored patterned china, then you probably don't want to go bananas with all of your other choices, although there are people that do it, and do it well. It just gets very tricky.

If your china is more simple, then you can be more out there in terms of color and pattern with your other choices.

Also, it is probably a good idea to purchase what will be your most expensive thing first, and that will inform the remainder of your choices.

I am an Oriental carpet gal, so I would get the rug first, and then I would paint on my own walls and unabashedly plagiarize from all the greats (and give them credit somewhere in a corner.)

Or you can go to a gallery and knock yourself out there, and then buy a more modest floor covering, (though I must say, a machine made knock off of an Oriental is usually not any less expensive.)

Then once you buy your first thing, you know how intensely patterned and colored you want the next major piece to be, and how much $$$ you have left.

About the curtains, I think something in the shade of your walls or chairs is a good bet, the simpler the better.

What would be very nice would be a substantive fabric with a very subtle threading or embroidery in it so that the threading or embroidery would have a sheen or shimmer, but the same color. It would be like having paint that is two different sheens of the same color, but one has more reflective value than the other.

Another option is a substantive fabric all in one color with a very luxurious trim or braid on the edge, you can do it in the same color or a different color or color mix, and you might want to have a tie back with a big luxurious fluffy tassel that is either the same color as the curtain or that combines the colors of your rug.

You don't need to get rid of the black blinds, they add a wonderful touch of drama, and will totally black out the room if you want to show a movie, and they will certainly block out what you don't want to see outside and will shield you and your guests from prying eyes.

If you want to pump up the drama you can add a teeny tiny touch of glaze to the blinds, think of fairy dust. You can decide what type. An opalescent, or glittery gold or silver or bronze. Whatever you like, dilute it mightily with glaze and experiment with painting sticks you've painted black to see how it comes out.

You want an extremely subtle look, a "barely there effect," something that makes the blinds come alive, but not so much that people even realize what it is and what you did.

My laptop is terrible at depicting color, and your kitchen cabinets look black to me, so I can't really tell what is going on there, but your kitchen is marvelous, and I like how you've mixed metals there. Matchy-matchy is a snooze, and very smart of you to lay your backsplash tiles vertically!

@loobab, I agree about Persians. I have them in my home, and think they are classic too, and can go with any style. I feel they are essentially a 'neutral' and gorgeous backdrop for design, when selected properly, and allow us to pull many complementary colors from them.

I went to a rug website called Solo Rugs, they have an amazing selection and a visualizer. I grabbed Joanna's photo for her post and uploaded it the website to try out a few rugs/colors/styles.

Here is another idea for that black wall.
I love, love three dimensional displays and although some people eschew mirrors in the dining area, I think they are great.

They reflect a bright chandelier, sparkling crystal, lovely china, gleaming silver, colorful food, beautiful guests, and the mirror itself should have an interesting and important frame.

There are so many wonderful starburst mirrors, but what would also look stunning would be a very large Venetian glass mirror.

They are pricey but out of this world beautiful.
But only have it hung by a professional because they are extremely heavy.

And in addition to the mirror you can have three dimensional things of interest, whatever you like.

You can find some architectural looking brackets to hang and on which to display something that is sizable.
Or a gallery shelf or two and place things that are interesting in shape and color that will serve as talking points for you and your guests.

In a room with a lot of black and white it would be nice to have some things of nature.

There are just truly marvelous large specimen seashells you can purchase and display, large corals, exotic butterflies, fantastic fossils, even turtle shells.

There are butterflies that are red, purple, green, turquoise, yellow, any color you can think of, and the huge Atlas moth is so weird and bizarre.

You can get a big big black, gray and white mount of Orthoceras fossils. Or line up some emptied ostrich eggs and let your guests wonder what you made their dinner out of.

Mother Nature is truly a wonder!

I have seen at someone’s house an exquisite vintage wedding kimono hung on a wall. They are usually in the red family and that might be a bit much with a red rug, but it’s a thought for elsewhere in your home.

Or you can purchase just a great elaborate obi with red and gold and or silver threads shot through it and hang that.

Wow, would that look outstanding hung across the higher part of the black wall with the silvery Venetian mirror below.

You can purchase vintage silver pieces for a song these days, young people don’t want to be bothered polishing silver and they don’t want anything that can’t be thrown in the dishwasher. Well, goody, goody, more for those who appreciate silver.

You can put get the fake flickering tapers and put candlesticks on the brackets to illuminate your marvelous mirror and no worries about dripping wax!!

I read through a few of the comments and wanted to answer a few questions.

The wall is a very very deep grey. I had the mantle painted this colour as well. See photo.
The colour is Noble Grey by DULUX. I plan on doing mirrors or shelves beside the fireplace. That’s a whole other thing I have to figure out but I will try to create a new thread for that soon!

Originally the dining set was set to the other orientation but the head chair was tighter to the wall than what it is now.

I took a closer shot of the chandelier so you can see the contrast against the wall. I had to order more light bulbs that’s why they are missing.

Joanna, You have a beautiful home! I like the red rug with the rest of your things, though I am not a fan of rugs under dining room tables due to spillage onto them. I really appreciate you picking things you love and going with them. I cringe at the unnecessary criticisms you have gotten in this post and others. Especially once you have already made a decision and finished something. I am glad you have thick skin. This website used to be a lot nicer and more helpful without the nastiness. I like your taste! I agree with lafdr, I love the red rug and I think you can absolutely lean into the modern farmhouse look.

This image is something like your room. I could totally see the red rug in there. I like the way the big mirror breaks up the grey. I am excited to see some white window coverings. I think replacing the black temp blinds will make the space look a lot different.

I also like the idea of three pictures, with big white mattes:

Move the light and the table. It will never look correct if you don't do this.

BeverlyFLADeziner There is no moving the light. It's a brand new build and the ceiling is connected to the entryway, living room and kitchen. The patch work would be a totally disaster! Also the furniture would start getting too close to the living room space.

david yves Thanks!! The black blinds are growing on me a bit but my visions boards all show white or cream colours curtains and I think its because I prefer when decor and furniture do all of the talking, per say.

loobab Our china is quite simple. They are white with a goldish platinum accents. I would pull it out and take a photo but god knows where those boxes are!

Curtains I totally agree. I was going to go with something closer to the wall colours maybe a the cream side like the chairs. It may be hard to decide but I need to start ordering samples ASAP.

My kitchen cabinets are a dark gunmetal blue. I love them! They bring in so much interest in the space and its so unexpected. The builder thought I was nuts going blue but once he saw the final product he absolutely loved it! I agree about the tile as well. People told me to go traditional but as you can see, Im not that kinda chick! lol

Olychick Unfortunately the dining table turned would give no space for an accent piece of furniture against the dark wall.
