Design Dilemma Home Decorating

need wall decor ideas for foyer staircase wall

Hi. In our foyer, that has very high, 2-story ceilings and a staircase, i have on one wall a large persian rug tapestry. Opposite the tapestry is the staircase which is blank except for two sconces. We are renovating so my budget is tight for pricey art. The whole area is echo-y. I’m not partial to filling the wall with family photos, want to keep it fairly simple. The foyer itself has a large persian rug, chair, side table and lamp. I need suggestions on decor for that wall. Suggestions welcome!!! Thank you!

I would put the tapestry between the sconces and leave the wall where the tapestry is now empty. It is really above decorating height

HI -- I do not like houses that have these large open useless spaces . This is always a problem for noise and how to paint them and how to decorate . You would have to hire painters and the use of scaffolding and the high cost to do so and to maintain. That wasted square footage could be better used in the upstairs living areas . You could have some applied moldings in a square pattern or wallpaper for interest , or quilted fabric panels but some does not help with the sound . Tapestries or rugs or soft wall hangings helps a bit... as for a large painting that can be home made or the affect done with a wallpaper mural or a hired Artist . Maybe in the future consider having some of the area built in for useable square footage . That will add better value to the house .

I think you could do personal pictures there if you want. I don't have any suggestions as to what photo. Just make sure really love them! Since they're expensive and I would have a hard time committing to a large canvas photo for an extended period of time, here's an idea (see link). I think three of these would be too small for the space and it would look better as a grouping. If nothing else you could tape up the form core (poster board would work better) just to get an idea of size and what you think of something up there. There are a lot of photo layout ideas online. If you do use photos, I would go with all black and white or maybe sepia tone. (Quick fyi - After reading the tutorial again, down in the comment, these are engineering prints and can only be printed in b&w.) Went to look at the prints last night. Very long story, but the young man selling them decided he'd rather hold on to them and do some more research, as he thought they might have more value than what he had advertised them at. It was a very long drive and he said he "felt bad" that we'd driven so far, so he allowed me to take one of the prints of my choice. My initial reaction was to be utterly pissed off, but for a number of reasons I found myself feeling very compassionate toward the kid instead. When I got home, I was able to deconstruct the backing on my frame sufficiently to see that the print is actually a page that has been pulled from a book. I assume the others are from the same book. The value is really in the custom framing, and some of the frames are a bit scratched (nothing that couldn't be covered with a wood scratch filler though), and although I left with only one of the prints I'd like to have the others. Maybe hang them in the hallway upstairs, gallery-style, or even in the library where the sepia tones would work well. I wouldn't hang them on the staircase wall after all.

I don't think it's necessary to put anything up that high. Instead, I would focus more on decorating at eye level. Perhaps stacked art to the left of the tv and a tall floor plant in the right corner.

I am assuming your podcast will be video'd, so people will see your studio. The first thing I would do is get rid of the coffee table, it is totally lacking in style. I am not sure about the ottoman either. While it is nice, it is for a residential space, and in addition, the color doesn't relate to chairs, and as this is not a home, you don't have the opportunity to bring in other things to allow the blue to connect with the yellow. Under the window get a glass console table, perhaps with a shelf on which to place the products that you will discuss during your podcast. In addition, get a coffee table, perhaps a round one, on which you and your guest can place a cup and the products you are discussing. I am not thrilled with that metal window covering. Perhaps you can cover it with something? On the walls you could project photos of people carrying the products you are discussing. Or something similar. And take the photos yourself, or find classic photos.

I would get a large piece of mdf and cover it with whatever piece of wallpaper or fabric you can find that moves you. Then hang it.
