Comments (9)Hi Stacy, As far as your pump goes, it depends on what you want in your pond. If you want a good-sized waterfall, 800 gallons an hour isn't bad, in my opinion. I have ponds and a stream that currently total about 500 gallons, and I have a waterfall pump that is capable of recirculating the water at a rate of about 3,000 gph. I got a bigger one because I felt that I would like to expand my pond someday (which I just started doing about 3 days ago). Anyway, it has worked just fine with my smaller pond system -- I just plumbed the line so that it had a valve on it, and I can use the valve to control the amount of water that is recirculated (I have choked down to about half of its capacity -- the manufacturers said that using a valave to limit the pumping volume of the pump -- within reason -- will not harm it). Like I said in another post, make your pond as big as you your imagination will allow for, without breaking your budget -- most folks find that as soon as they are finished building their pond, they immediately wish they had made it bigger....See MoreOK -- I'm grossed-out at this
Comments (37)The subject matter does not bother me. We really ought to be talking about things. Death is a part of life that, in our kind of culture, is swept under the rug and kept as unobtrusive as possible. But we will all face it. We ought to know our choices and make the best one. Both for burial and what comes after death. That's an interesting proposition. Truly, that's what is supposed to happen to bodies; decompose and be re-used. But I probably would not go that way myself. There is something to be said for traditional dignity and teaching the young that life is more than just recycled chemicals. However, I can easily see that if someone believes that's all human life is, it would be a logical next step. There are a couple of great books I have, "Caring for Your Own Dead" and "The American Way of Life and Death". Both of these are eye openers on the funeral industry and how to not only save money, but dignity. Thinking of donating your body to science? "Stiff; the Curious Lives of Human Cadavers" might change your mind, if you have the idea that your body will lay on the table to be examined in med school. Most cadavers are used in very... unexpected ways. As for me, I want a simple hole dug on my land, wrap my night gowned body in a simple sheet the same day I die. Cover me with a mound of dirt and walk away. I'm not there. Don't come and visit my grave. I'm not there and I'll be really mad at the time and tears anyone wasted visiting a storage pit. If the curious eyes of people make them feel the need to do SOMETHING, they can plant a Rose of Sharon bush on top. That's a nickname for the One who has victory over death and freed me from the grave. And I want a HUGE party thrown. Lots of food, lots of singing, lots of dancing and joy. I'll be seeing them soon. :o)...See MoreOk, I'm new - Help paint my house!
Comments (4)Um....well....wow. I did make it through the entire post...and quite a post it was! By the way....I'll take the pony. I already have a dirty kid. Lucky for me I have good paint on the walls...LOL! OK....let's get this out of the way... There's a good chance I may say something you don't agree with...and that's OK. I'm a 3rd generation painter and started learning the business when I was 12. Take that for what you will. Every painter...no matter how long they've been doing it...thinks they're the expert (just my opinion after knowing thousands). Now..your situation... This new concept of "full spectrum paints"....pure baloney. Absolutely nothing but marketing. Every paint is a full spectrum paint. Let's not forget that there are only 3 primary colors. Black is the presence of all color and white is the absence of all color. From this we derive all variations....and colorants (the term for what is added to paint) are manufactured to certain variations for simplicity. Without boring anyone to death about the progression...this page is a good start: http://www.artsparx.com/color_basicprinc.asp That said...what is most important is quality of the paint and the consistency of color. Quality of the paint is fairly simple. Every paint manufacturer has good paint and garbage paint. There is no such thing as 'which brand is better'. They all have top of the line...and they all have contractor (new construction) grades. What you want is 100% acrylic. Acrylic refers to the type of resin used to make the paint...and it's the best. Consistency of color is a tad more involved. Green (for example) can be made from blue and yellow...or it can be made from black and yellow...or from purple (blue and red) and yellow. All results are 'green' but they will have a different effect on the eye. You can take the same shade of green...made each way...and they will 'look' and 'feel' different. The best way to get an idea of this is to look at a paint 'fan deck' or color chip display. You see blues in one area...then blues in another different area. Most people look at this and wonder 'they're all blue...why aren't they just all together'? There's a reason...and you have to understand the reason. While they may look very similar...they are made from different color combinations. This is what gives color a 'feel'. An example is a home I recently painted. They do not like color. Huge fans of beige...in different forms. They chose shades from all over the sample choices. Beige is beige...right? Nope. I tried to explain...but they loved the little chips. Now that it's done...there's a different feel from one room with a beige based on black...to the adjoining room with a beige based on red. It's subconscious...but recognizable. Now I'm repainting 3 rooms. So here's the thing for you. Pick whatever color you like for each room. You can go for warmth, soft, vibrant, or any mood you wish the room to have. What creates flow is not color...but what the color is based on. Try to think of the basics of color and not get drawn into the hype. Now...this post of mine has gone on more than I planned....so if anyone makes it through...you can pass my pony on to them. I'll hang on to the dirty kid I have......for now. Best of luck to you....See MoreOK, I Admit it...
Comments (18)I give my small batting pieces to my S-I-L as she does embroidery machine work and makes stuffed animals for the kids in our family. If you are not going to use the pieces I would encourage you to donate them to your local library children's activities or donate to Goodwill stores, I would not throw them away. Best to you, Sandra...See MoreJudy Good
