Removing lead paint from wooden mantle

Tim Watson

We just bought a home built in 1948. We are removing about four layers of paint from a wooden mantlepiece with lots of original designs carved in it. We slathered it with Citristrip and let it sit for about 18 hours (without covering it) and then started scraping with both metal and wooden scrapers. It wasn’t until we started that I actually tested for lead and of course its lead paint. We are now wearing gloves and we have put down a drop cloth. We got masks but they were annoying so we aren’t wearing them. Should we be doing more to protect against lead poisoning or am I just freaking out?
