Shopping for washer - 'alternative' detergent & hanging clothes?
Comments (14)Sorry to take so long to get back to this thread. Very happy to get so much input. Thanks! Sandy, good to know that you've used Seventh Generation and good to hear that Sears has one that seems to work for people. Thanks for sharing all the comments you have heard on different machines. cynic...Yes, I've heard that from the appliance store that we have dealt with over the years. They also do the service calls and he thought that a good portion of the probs people have are because they are either using cold water or too much detergent or not the right kind of detergent. Going to spend some time this afternoon looking into Speed Queen. Thanks mattstarr as well. Liriodendron....hello fellow gardener. [g] I LOVE to hang clothes outside. We bought two retractable lines for outdoors and haven't got them up but hope to soon. What's better than fresh sheets and towels off the line? We also try to buy no chemicals on our clothes and hate the 'no iron' clothes that are more and more the norm. No seasonal allergies here either. I also love sleeping with open windows. My mother used to tell me stories of how their family always had windows open in the winter but kept snuggly under thick comforters. I will make sure to look for that heater and figure out if it functions correctly. Thanks. Yes, I hadn't thought of the fact that using the front door dryer is already a fact of life, I suspect as suburbanmd points out, it would just be more of what we would like to avoid. Something to think about though. I have been told by the appliance dealer that with new Top Loaders you are not supposed to shove all the clothes in, but carefully load by dropping clothes in one at a time. Still they come out tangled and wrinkled according to some....See MoreHave you made your own Clothes Detergent?
Comments (15)"Fabric softeners contains fats and/or oils to function as a lubricant to make fabric fibers slippery for a softer feel to the touch. Vinegar does not have a lubricating effect." That's somewhat true, fabric softeners have chemicals(QUATS) which coat fabrics so they feel softer. Vinegar removes any detergent residue which will make them softer, since you shouldn't use fabric softeners(including dryer sheets) on 100% polyester vinegar is a good substitute. https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080718154912AASU3ja...See MoreDetergent residue in cloths with Kenmore HE3t and Tide HE
Comments (14)A front loading washer made my life EASIER, not harder! I wouldn't ever go back to a top loader. You have to learn how to use them correctly, just like any new item. But I guess it all depends on whether a person makes the choice to learn how to use their appliances to get the most efficiency out of them. I have no idea why you would think that using a tablespoon of detergent to clean a load is silly. The formulation of detergents in this day and age allow for decreased amounts of detergent. Top loaders use 1/4 to 1/2 the amount that was recommended even 10 years ago. A person used to have to use a LARGE scoop for a regular load-- and the economy sized box of detergent couldn't even be lifted without help! I am sure there are plenty of others on this forum that remember those days :) Please tell me how it is common sense that not enough water is used to rinse properly? If you had researched front loaders and followed the instructions properly, you would find that the decreased amount of water actually rinses MUCH better than a whole tub load of water. That is because the water is forced through the fabic as the drum tumbles and take the soap with it as it does. Compare it to rinsing your driveway off with a hose-- if you don't use a nozzle, the water just runs over the pavement but doesn't rinse it too well but if you use a high pressure nozzle, the dirty water is pushed off of the pavement. I love my FL and love the money I have saved all the way around by using it-- and that doesn't include my time and energy!...See MoreHE detergent for dark clothing?
Comments (5)Persil (from German company Henkels) is available in formulations for whites & bright colours (with optical brighteners), for dark colours (without optical brighteners), and a special formulation called "Perwoll Black Magic" just for blacks. You can order through Amazon, or do a google search and you'll find dozens of other sellers. It's a bit pricey, but it's very concentrated, so a little goes a long way. Use half as much as the label instructions indicate -- or less (the instructions are intended for European users where the water is very, very hard). I've used Persil for years with very good results. Here is a link that might be useful: Persil at Amazon...See MoreWalnutCreek Zone 7b/8a
