Construction gingerbread recipe

I'd like a recipe for construction gingerbread that has a bit better taste and texture than the one I just tried. The gingerbread recipe I used is from Serious Eats. Spice level was good, but the texture is really dry. I realize that being strong enough for construction means that some texture has to be sacrificed but I'm hoping that there is something a bit better.

Here's what I made. It is kind of sloppy as it was thrown together as a quick experiment to see if gingerbread would be strong enough to tolerate the cantilever.

The recipe included thinning the scraps with water to a pipeable consistency for piping decorations. That part worked out really well. The candle holders, star, curlicues and dreidles were piped.
