Family Board Game Recommendations?

I am looking for a nice family board game that the parents and kids (youngest is 10) can enjoy playing. I bought the game Sequence on recommendations from the KT a few months ago. They have the usual board games such as Monopoly, Uno, Chutes and Ladders. Is there another great board game recommendation for under the tree this year?

Clue is a classic, although I don't know much about it, never having played. Perhaps others will chime in about its suitability for adults and children.

We play Pictionary, who what where or Telestrations every Christmas. About 10 people ranging from 9 to 78. So much fun! Even though probably not board games in the real sense.

For a large crowd, try the dice game LCR, available at Walgreens. Anyone can play, all ages. We use one dollar bills, each round starts with 3 dollars, nickels or quarters are good too, just buy a couple of rolls. and no one is ever "out". I've seen someone with no dollars in front of him go away the big winner of the pot. Great game for groups of 10 or more. Here is a link that might be useful: LCR

Check out geekandsundry.com under Tabletop games - lots and lots of board games! My faves to play with the grandkids were Qwirkle, Tsuro, & Ticket to Ride. Settlers of Cataan was also fun, but more mature than my 10-y-o grandchild, but mostly because he doesn't read English well. (He's Japanese.) If your son likes strategic games, there are many more out there - you just need to look!

This is not a board game, but all ages except for the very young can play it: Pictionary. A member of a team draws a card upon which is a word or phrase. He is allowed to say what category it falls in, but no more. He, then, draws/sketches on paper or chalk board and the team tries to guess the word/phrase. Meanwhile, a timer is running. To get a point, the team must discovery the correct word/phrase within the time limit. After an agreed upon play period, for example, 1/2 hour, the team with the most points win. After the play period expires, play continues until each team has had equal number of turns.

We are big boardgame people. We LOVE codenames and also Codenames Duet (my husband and I can play that one by ourselves and do for hours). Some of our other favorites: Just One - This is super simple to learn and really fun, it's kind of along the same theme as codenames Catchphrase - Simple and fun Hanabi - Fun card game to play w/ 2 or 4, very simple to learn and requires some strategy Pandemic - (Also relatively complicated strategy game w/ a bunch of add-ons) Gamewright Forbidden Desert – The Cooperative Strategy Survival Desert Board Game Multi-colored, 5" (Relatively complex cooperative strategy game we enjoy) Gamewright Forbidden Island - Cooperative, relatively complex, good but not as good as Forbidden Desert) Dominion (Not as complex as Pandemic or Gamewright but more of a learning curve than Just One)

"Pictionary" is fun for a group.

The person starting the game is given a card that has several objects named on it. His job is to get his team members to identify the chosen word, but he can not use any part of the word. He can use only figures that he draws. A timer is started when he begins and the play ends when the timer times out or someone guesses the word.

Another one to try is "Apples to Apples".

We play so many. Catch phrase/Rummy Royal, cribbage, cranium, Life, backgammon, Chinese checkers all well suited for a 10 yr old.

DD is 13. Some of these are not board games, but our long time favorites are Life (80s version :) ), Qwirkle, Headbandz, Uno, Ratuki, and Yahtzee.

We love many games but our favorite is "shooters" Not even sure if they sell it anymore. Michigan rummy or triopoly is also fun.

My family (adults now) enjoy Catan. Not sure if a ten year old would find it as compelling to work out a playing strategy as we do, but the board and pieces are fun to look at.

But all ages could enjoy "Left, Right, Center". It's fast paced, easy rules (no complicated strategies to figure out) and you never know who is going to win until it's all over. Highly recommended!

Nickel, we played Left, Right, Center last year for the first time - for lottery tickets. I literally was out my first roll and never got back in! But everyone else had a blast. :/

Left - Right -Center is a blast especially if you have a large group. I've played it with as many as 30 people. It took about an hour and a half to finish the game.

Farkel is another dice game that is a lot of fun for all ages. Cheap too.

LoneJack, I bought Farkel recently. We haven't played it yet but I thought I had heard of the game from someone who really liked it. But I'm not sure who. Maybe it was on here before. Need to read up on how to play before Christmas. : )

Although not a board game, my family of all ages love to do the Saran Wrap ball at Christmas! You can Google or find instructions on YouTube.

I like Jumanji, but I think it helps if you've seen the movies. Worst game is Monopoly, I think, as I've seen it turn ugly.

There is a Pictionary type game with playdoh...you sculpt the words.

Also a game called Huggermugger for those with teens...has to do with word meanings and spelling.

Mancala is fun for all ages. Battleship (we used to play in teams).

I love the idea of game night. We did it when I was a kid, in college (although I can't recommend those) , with the neighbors when I was first married to my first husbands, as young families when we all had kids and still with my grown kids, and definitely on family vacations. It was a something I did with my kids when I was divorced and the kids and I would have a quieter than usual weekend or holiday. My husband an I tend to either play board games or do puzzles during power outages and we also participate in group card games.
