Non-fiction books to gift a botanist?
Comments (13)@Karen That's an excellent idea, thank you. I found one called Australian Carnivorous Plants, one of her favourite kinds. @rhizo_1 Those authors all look rather fascinating. She actually has none of those, which to me sounds like a perfect excuse for making a bookshelf to store her new library on. Thank you. @meldy_nva Yet a third excellent idea. We've never been able to agree on decorations for our domicile, but x-ray prints are something I'll enjoy as much as her. Thank you, for ending years of tedious point and counterpoint. @daituom Because giving a gift voucher to a pretty important person is thoughtless and lazy, and the simplest way to say I didn't care enough to look into her interests. It's like the difference between getting an e-card for St. Valentine's Day, versus a long, handwritten love letter on thick hemp paper, opening the envelope and being assaulted by the scent of the rose petals tumbling out. Or something like that. It's a terrible, painful, hypothetical cliche, but I know which one she'd rather get. Not to mention remember two weeks down the track. Besides all that, she can buy books she already knows about on her own. Also, why did you capitalise HER and SHE? I can't tell whether you're trying to be snooty with me for presuming something, or trying to constructively point out that I'll fail at finding something she enjoys....See More(Houseboat) Hostess Gift . . . Comments (16)I like the idea of the books for the GKs. I love to give the gift of books, and am known for either books or B&N GC for all occasion gifts. lol We purchased books for my nephew about sharks and some other animal (can't remember which animal the other was) that had small scale see-through 3D model of the featured animal in the book. When you turned the pages, it pictured different significant organs, etc. and cool facts about why each animal had differing skin and the like, as well as a child's level explanation of the part each animal played in the wild. Very cool books, but I cannot for the life of me remember where I found them. I am thinking it was NOT a book store, but someplace like Sam's club. My nephew loved those books and found taking the model apart and learning about marine life. My FIL has always had a boat (yacht), and we've spent loads of time seeing many out of the way places. At times it is hard to keep kids of a certain age occupied while at sea. These books were unlike anything I've ever seen and I spend alot of time in book stores. Any event, your post about the kids made me think about these books I found for my young nephew, but it has been at least 5 years now. I've done a google search and have come up empty. They make a great gift for children who are interested in animals. If I can find the name of the books or publisher, I will post since they would make great gifts for any child....See MoreClutter-Free (or close) Gift Idea List
Comments (48)a really good-quality umbrella (men seem to like those huge golf ones that make some sort of territory-grabbing statement, which is really annoying in NYC). tickets to some event you think he'd like (though if you get him a pair, he may feel he HAS to take you--depends on the dynamics of the relationship) a new wallet--if you can see what style he's using already. My DH gets these from time to time, and they are useful, bcs his wear out eventually. Does he use a day planner or a PDA? Could you "up the ante" by getting him a new binder, or a new case for it? Perhaps a higher-quality one than he's got? And who cares whether he can get a better deal on it than you can--the point is not how much it cost, but that you thought of it in connection w/ him. And there are always books, if you know what he likes to read. Or DVDs. And, don't pressure yourself too much. Once people get to be grownups, the importance of presents falls a little--just one small, nice thing is great. Oh--oh--TOYS! the phrase "once people get to be grownups" made me think of this. Grownups don't get toys--not TRUE toys. We get "toys," w/ quotation marks. We get iPods instead of GameBoys, DVDs instead of action figures. Get him a toy, even if it's a smallish one. Lego makes these really great little things called XPods, I think, that are $10 or so, and you can make little bitty cars, or robots, or whatever is in the Pod. (here's a pretty good selection--they change the colors periodically, though) and for $20, they have kits for making dinosaurs, etc. And for $7, there are "mini Designer" sets The XPods are neat, bcs they result in a little result, which means they go together fast, and he can stick it on his computer monitor at work, or something, without looking like an immature geek. (not that a guy who puts together Lego dinosaurs is an immature geek, mind you...) I gave the Xpod to every one of the guys in my family at Christmas this year--they didn't go ballistic, but they were amused and they thought it was fun....See MoreIdeas for "gourmet treats" gift basket?
Comments (28)I'm doing well on my (new theme) Winter Survival Basket. I've ordered scone mixes and some other goodies from KA Flour, went to a craft show and found "Herd Nerd" spice mix as well as an all natural product similar to Vicks Vaporub, added a variety pack of medicinal teas including Throat Coat and Echinacea Plus (my two sisters in law aren't tea fans but I figure most people will drink tea if they're feeling icky). I'll add coffee and red wine and some other fancy snack items, and a winter-themed candle. I am also doing a "self care" package for my two BFFs as we have all had our own stresses this year and we keep talking about the importance of taking time for ourselves. Their bags will include face masks (I ordered a big assortment package of face masks from Sephora that I can split up), chamomile teas, good chocolates, silly t-shirts from Gap (one says NAP and the other says Saturday. Sunday. Repeat.), and a manicure gift certificate. I'll probably end up doing some kind of assortment basket for my 83 yo dad, who is impossible to shop for. But he likes red wine, and snacks, and I can usually get him gas gift cards and grocery gift cards that he'll use....See MoreUser
