Old broken trash compactor alternative
Comments (4)I have the same problem, Betty. Old kitchen, broken trash compactor, don't want to replace it with another compactor. The trash bins that you linked to, antss, seem to need a cabinet front. I don't have any way of getting a cabinet front to match my existing, ugly Formica cabinets. I probably won't be able to renovate the kitchen for a year or two, and I'd love to find an inexpensive stopgap solution....See MoreTrash cans on the kitchen floor vs. a cabinet pull out
Comments (15)sw_in_austin..I had forgotten about the dirty wall behind the trash can! We also had a stand alone trash can in our old kitchen. Like sw_in_austin the wall behind it would need constant cleaning b/c my DH & then DS & DD would "shoot" the trash into the can from half-way across the room (too much basketball in our family!). We used to take the trash out every day or two. Recyclables were kept in the garage in 3 separate containers...glass/plastic, newspapers, cardboard. Recyclables would either sit on the counter until someone took time to take them to the garage or they just go thrown out b/c it was easier. With the remodel, we put in an 18" double-bin trash pullout. The bins are 35qts each. The front bin is for trash, the back is for recyclables. I find that we recycle a lot more...which reduces the amount of trash. We now put glass/plastic & cardboard in the one bin (our county does mixed recycling). B/c of the increase in recycling, I find that we still only take the trash out every day or two. I wouldn't want the trash around any longer than that b/c it does start to smell. Recyclables, btw, also have to go out every couple of days. As to whether there's a mess on the door, no there isn't. My family no longer treats the trash can as a basket so trash is thrown out w/less force now! There have been a couple of times when something spilled, but we wiped it up right away. As to keeping the trash open while prepping/cooking...if you install a foot pedal you could open it hands-free! (We have the pedal but we haven't installed it yet.)...See MoreBroken Hafele Trash Pedal (alku05?)
Comments (18)In the interest of potential statistical analysis, I would add that when my cabinets arrived last year, one of two (silver) foot pedals was broken, or broke immediately when the cabinets were first tested after installation, I am unclear which. The cabinet maker, Ted Wood, had pre-installed the pedals. The broken part was the metal flat spring, as I recall. I had the cabinet supplier provide a replacement, which I installed with greater conformance to Hafele's directions and which so far has not broken. However, the non-conforming aspect of the original installation did not appear to me to be a probable cause of the spring breakage. kas...See Moretrash receptacle in blind corner accessible from outside, yay or nay?
Comments (15)We raise Nigerian Dwarfs and two years bought a wonderful Mini-Nubian doe. She just kidded for the first time. I LOVE Nigerians' stature, colors, and milk, but this Mini-Nubian is a dream milker (teats that fill my hands! she's like a faucet!), and just the sweetest, albeit a little lazy. We crossed her with a Nigerian so the twins this week are mini Mini-Nubians. The trash system is dead. He won't budge, and he never won't budge. We're too busy for me to try to win him over....See MoreMelissa Mozzone
