Broken Hafele Trash Pedal (alku05?)

alku05: any updates on your broken Hafele trash pedal? I've had problems with the plastic parts as well and have superglued parts together. But it just broke again today. Were you able to just replace the broken parts?

Ours broke (it was that silver-colored curved pedal), and based on reviews online we chose to go with the brown one as a replacement (not do the silver one again). My husband installed it (he did not do the initial install, cabinetmakers did it) -- and it's been great ever since, better than the silver one (has a better foot feel, which sounds insane but it's true). I'll ask him if there are any particulars I should mention ....

Thanks rmkitchen. Any information would be appreciated. We had the silver foot pedal as well and I'm just sick and tired of glueing parts together. Are your cabinets frameless as well? Did you have to make any modifications? Also, does the brown pedal one work similar to the silver pedal one? Are there plastic parts that can break? I tried to find photos of it, but can't.

Dietitian, I am pretty sure the cabinets are fully overlay. To be honest, I'm not 100 percent sure exactly what that means. I think it means no facing around the cabinets, which I have (and I'm sure Dutchwood does that) The file drawers work very well for the Pyrex. I keep all my Pyrex there except bowls. (I have a separate drawer for deep bowls that also has a CD rack in it to keep the lids separate. This drawer under the glass cabinets- I'm in our FL house now not PA so I can't take a picture). I'm not sure what to say about the garbage- here is a picture of it open if that helps. Dutch wood did every cabinet in my house (including pantry and closets). I've had my haefele foot pedal on the trash drawer for 4 1/2+ years now. It took me a while to get used to using the pedal so I used the pull a bunch of times at the beginning. And yes, guests usually just use the pull too. I've not yet had a problem (knock on wood). I do think that using the pedal is preferrable. I've read that comment about it being bad to use the pull here several times, but I think that would only really hurt it if you did it habitually as opposed to occasionally when guests do it. Tam, I would try to get your family to use it. I'm not sure how tight you have the bungee cord attached, but my drawer doesn't come bounding out with any great force. It opens to about half way so that the trash can is fully exposed and the back recycle bin is only about an inch exposed. I often stand in front of it deliberatly as it is opening so that it hits my leg, so I can throw something away without looking, and it just gently taps my leg. If I want to get out of the way as it's opening, it's not like I have to quickly leap away to avoid getting hit. It seems like your daughter could learn to get out of the way, I think.

Follow-up: Rob is no longer with Hafele, but he forwarded my email to the appropriate person at Hafele. A few emails later, and a new and improved replacement pedal was on my doorstep! A borrowed snub-handled screwdriver and a handy DH, and voila--pedal installed and we're back in business. Thank you for your help breezygirl and thanks be to power of the almighty GW!!!! :-)

All – I have been very much enjoying the responses and love all the stories, thank you! Funkycamper, Eam44, mdln – I don’t want to have to disable the foot pedal, but I’m willing to try it for a few weeks. (Year or two…? Please, no!) Meganmca –The problem occurs both when we’re around and when we’re in other rooms. Hunter’s balls and other toys sometimes get trapped behind the pedals, which is how he learned this new trick (sigh). We’re working on ‘Leave it’ and if he tries to open it while I’m at the sink (i.e., at that cabinet), I’ll either tell him to Leave It and/or hold the door in with my knee. I like the idea of a magnetic lock, will look into options. K sissy, Stan Z– Thanks for the ice cube info. I’ve read conflicting info online and still on the fence; will call my vet when I think of it. (Hunter just likes them so much!) Lily – he hasn’t scratched the window sills much, but I know that’s coming. He’s currently crated but I look forward to when he can spend time/the day in the house and be trusted. That was funny about the sliding screen door, yes, same problem. Christine – Loved your story about Morgan! Bpathome – That dog is long gone, but by the time we thought of removing the towel, he had moved on to some other way of opening the fridge. He’d also do it when we stayed with others, so depending on the layouts of the kitchens, we’d have to come up with creative ways to block the doors from being opened. Interesting idea about reversing direction, thanks. With the pedal, one pushes it in, towards the cabinet, vs. down, so it's just a little kick to open the door. I'll have DH look into it. Another idea I've been mulling over is the servo-drive (darn it, now the tune is in my head again) - different way of opening the doors - but it's an expensive solution which the pup might well figure out before long, too.

I don't make it over here very much these days, and I'm sorry I missed this post. We didn't get a response from Hafele in Spring of 2009. We should have pushed the issue with them, but to be honest we didn't because our first child was born right before it broke, and we were understandably busy.

I do hope Rob will be back. The part that tam184 posted is the same part broken on ours. Sure would be great to get a replacement of just that piece. I can dig out pictures if needed.

In the interest of potential statistical analysis, I would add that when my cabinets arrived last year, one of two (silver) foot pedals was broken, or broke immediately when the cabinets were first tested after installation, I am unclear which. The cabinet maker, Ted Wood, had pre-installed the pedals.

The broken part was the metal flat spring, as I recall. I had the cabinet supplier provide a replacement, which I installed with greater conformance to Hafele's directions and which so far has not broken. However, the non-conforming aspect of the original installation did not appear to me to be a probable cause of the spring breakage.

Well, Christmas came a few days early for me this year. Rob (diyguy88) worked his magic and the Hafele product manager sent me a new replacement pedal which is supposed to be 50% stronger than the older version. The pedal is so functional and when it broke, I hated having to open the trash cabinet with my hands. Well, now I've got my pedal back and it's been great! Thanks Rob and Hafele for the super customer service.

Although I am no longer employed by Hafele, I would encourage anyone else with the same issue to contact the company via the 800 number on the Web site.

If customer service can't seem to help simply ask to speak with the Kitchen Product Manager.
