Sloppy Joes for Dinner

I have a pot of Grainlady’s Sloppy Joes simmering on the stove for an early dinner. I haven’t made them in quite awhile, but remember them being very good. (I do miss Grainlady and her down-to-earth recipes..... and comments..... AND knowledge.). I know you’ll want the recipe so here it is:

Grainlady’s Sloppy Joes

guessing at 4 servings

1/2 chopped onion

1/4 cup chopped celery

1 T. Fat

1 pound ground beef

1 small can tomato sauce

1/4 cup catsup

1 T. Vinegar

1T. Brown sugar

salt and pepper

In skillet, mix ground beef, onions, and celery. Brown beef, breaking the meat into small pieces as you turn it with a spoon, and cook the vegetables until slightly tender. Drain any fat/liquid from the meat mixture. Add the tomato sauce, catsup, vinegar, brown sugar, and salt and pepper (to taste). Put the lid on the skillet and simmer for at least 20 minutes over low heat. (You can add a little water or stock if the mixture seems too thick.). To serve, spoon the mixture over warmed or toasted hamburger buns.

Note: the original recipe also had 1/4 cup chopped green pepper in the mixture, but neither Grainlady or I use that.

I haven't fixed sloppy joes in ages!! But they do sound good and actually last week's Halloween cartoon of the guy in the Manwich can surrounded by his family of female witches kind of triggered an urge to fix them :-)

Think I have most everything on hand.........

Definitely serves 4 hamburger buns... in my case two hungry teenage boys! I should have doubled the recipe for tonight.

For parties, I like to serve food that you don't need two hands to eat, or that needs cutting with a knife, unless you are doing a sit down at a table meal. In the living room, on an upholstered chair or couch, I don't want to have to balance a plate on my lap and use both hands to raise something to my mouth, or have a knife and fork in my hands with the plate precariously sliding around on my lap. I appreciate food that is either finger food or that can be stabbed or scooped with a fork while I hold the edge of my plate with my other hand. Even with one handed food, I don't want to eat (so don't serve) something that is going to slop sauce on the front of my clothes or onto the furniture. So I'd think about those sorts of things when deciding on what to serve. As delicious as some food is, it's just not good buffet style party food.

Rhizo, you're funny, and also very creative. Your dinner sounds delish! Jasdip, you sure are getting your exercise with all the shoveling. That recipe has been shared since I was a kid in 4-H where I first made it in a Foods Class. It's been one of the best - I only have a pound of ground beef and need to feed-a-crowd, recipes in my recipe box. I've converted Manwich users with it. It's been reprinted in Church Cookbooks three times that I know of, and not by me, but by people who got the recipe from me. Three generations of teenagers have consumed them because my 15-year old granddaughter is now making this recipe for her friends. So glad it worked for you. We go through most of a big bag of chopped kale a week, in our daily greens and fruit 'sludgie ', as an addition to a pot of field peas and rice, and cooked up like collards. Deeby, there are tons of vinegar based slaw recipes out there.....zero vinegar. I'm cooking up a pot of Rice Select mixed grains and rice, cooked with onions and green peppers, a big portion of crowder peas tossed in the pot. It's seasoned with some hot sauce and catsup. It smells so good! It'll go with some left over chicken from a few days ago and sliced tomatoes.

I've never eaten anything like that. Isn't it horrendously messy? How do you stop the filling from falling out and doesn't the bread go all soggy? I'd love to try something new!

I make a similar Sloppy Joe with Butterball Turkey Burger patties. Crumble them up so they look like ground beef and so, with all the other seasonings, they taste just like the beef Joe's.

Islay - this is an American favorite because we really do like to eat messy stuff. Yes, the filling falls out, the bun gets soggy, and you have to use your fork to scrape up the bits from your plate (or as I do using some potato chips to get the bits up), but do try them - they are delicious and they do not taste the same as if you put the filling in a bowl.

I love sloppy joes. I don't add brown sugar but do add some ketchup and a tangy barbecue sauce. I now take a pound of ground beef, make half into sloppy joes and the other half into 2 hamburgers, and freeze them.

I just serve them open-faced over hamburger buns. I've never seen anyone try to eat them like on the can of Manwich, burger style!

I served Sloppy Joe's to a couple of adult lunch guests not too long ago and yes they were messy but yes they were good. My friend commented that she used to serve them in hot dog rolls to her 3 boys when they were kids and I thought that was BRILLIANT! So much neater!

Islay, I think of it as American comfort food and an economical meal stretcher. Kids like it because it is basically ketchup mixed with cooked minced beef.

Without all the sugar and some veg it would be similar to the base layer in Irish Shepherds pie or the Canadian meat pie.

I eat my sloppy joes open faced on a hamburger bun. With a fork. ( DH thinks it is funny.) I make mine with ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, onions, green pepper and a tiny bit of brown sugar.

When faced with the Sloppy Joes, my oldest grandson got out the fork and knife. While not it eating it open-faced, he was not willing to actually pick it up and make a mess like his brother it. (Brother scooped up the escaped remains with some corn chips.). However they ate it they both went back for seconds.
