A question about Rose de Rescht

When I started growing roses again in 2013, I planted a couple of Rose de Rescht Roses in pots. I was pleased with the fragrant little blooms and was so glad that I had gotten them They made it through the winter just fine and took off the next spring, they bloomed early on and the blooms were the most gorgeous pink color I had ever seen, and I was so happy with them. Right after that they became diseased and died. I was very disappointed, I never replaced them, seems like I had read they were very susceptible to some disease and I figured that was what they had, and they probably weren’t worth the effort. But if it was something I could prevent, I would love to have that rose again! Would appreciate your opinions, suggestions, etc. I hadn’t really thought much about this rose, but read a positive comment about it recently, and I remembered what a charming rose it is!

RdR is prone to the Damask Crud. Mine gets it every year after it blooms. I've had it for a decade though and it has never died from it. It just makes all the leaves yellow and spotty and fall off. Eventually they grow back and it even sometimes gives me a very small second bloom in the fall.

I don't know about the pith of an OGR, but with roses in general, if you leave a cane with brown pith, that cane may survive and bloom and even re-bloom, but usually not with the same energy and vigor and stamina that a white-pithed cane would. There is also the chance that the brown-pithed cane will sooner or later run out of energy and slowly start dying. One problem those of us in Zone 6 have to face is that early spring weather often includes wide swings in temperatures and sometimes some late hard freezes after the roses have already begun their spring growth. All this is very hard on canes. After a later hard freeze some years ago, I had to do lots of pruning back to white pith to allow those roses to get back to their former energy levels. In fact, it took me two years of pruning to get the roses back to "normal"--I just couldn't believe at first that that much pruning was necessary, but by the second year I realized I needed to be a bit ruthless in cutting back to good pith. The remarkable change in some of my roses that were now growing from completely white pithed canes would almost have to be seen to be believed. The abundance of bloom and vigorous growth resulting astounded me! Unless you get specific instructions otherwise for OGRs, I'd urge you to cut back to white pith. Kate

My Rdr is bare now, but it's in a spot where it's not getting a lot of sun right now because of the angle of the sun. My roses in the front get tons of sun even now because my yard faces south. It's actually sunnier there now than in the summer because then the sun is overhead and the trees block some of it. I have lots of new growth on most of my roses out front, but they may not have time to put on buds if it gets cold. Also, no rain for weeks, so that is having an effect. My teas look the best. Mdme Lambard is really pretty right now. Also Lady Hillingdon. I guess they like the cooler weather.

Embothrium, what kind of conditions do you have that caused it to rust so much? I don't normally have a problem with rust and I don't mind using the systemic stuff occasionally. I defiantly don't want a rose that needs the stuff on a regular basis to perform though. My soil is very alkaline clay. I do amend with an acidic mix, and have found that using a fertilizer for acid loving plants helps my roses. The climate is mostly dry and warm with hot summers. It does usually cool down at night here. That helps. I would be planting it on a slope that is difficult to water. In the summer I sometimes run a sprinkler in the early morning hours just to give that area some relief. With your rust experience, I'm wondering if some occasional overhead watering might spell disaster.

A utility knife works well, too. If the pot is a heavier injection molded nursery pot, you can cut the weaker side of the pot and turn the pot on its side and try gently pressing with your foot to break the bottom part. Sometimes it will crack at the tough bottom rim when you do this. That part is the hardest to cut. I love Rose de Rescht! In case no one has mentioned deadheading, note that it is really helpful for Portland rose remontancy. RdR starts out with very little rebloom the first couple of years and then comes into its own over time. Later, when RdR suckers more actively, you can tag the sucker, cut it and leave it in place to grow independent roots. Later, dig the tagged sucker and replant it. :-) Carol

Damask Crud, and where it's a problem, it's addicted to rust. It's been lovingly referred to as 'Rose de Wretch'.

Sara, my garden was totally neglected for a many years. Rose de Rescht was one of the first roses I ever got, (for its noted fragrance) and it is one of the few roses that survived this neglect. It was not in special place either and it was covered with weeds and ratty when I found it this spring. But it was alive. When I had gotten it I knew zero about roses, except that I wanted fragrance in my garden. I am only learning now about how to care for roses. Who knows why roses die? I bought 9 tiny bands this summer. I treated them all the same and all but one are thriving. One just crumpled up and died. It looked completely out of my control and just went away.

Rose de Rescht does get this remarkable spotting on its leaves. I cut mine down to 8 inches or less and sprayed it two times and the spotting went away completely. With some care it has taken off. It bloomed continuously all season and is blooming still, big glowing dark pink fragrant flowers. The leaves and stems are thicker and bigger than I have ever seen them. I will try to get a picture.

Its not my favorite rose but thats not because there is something wrong with it, its just me. I think its a pretty reliable rose and does bloom very well. If you can handle the spotting by some kind of spraying then its worth getting. Maybe it wont spot for you?

As long as I spray them with fungicide, the only problems I ever have with mine are an occasional bout of spider mites. Without spraying for fungus they would look horrible in my garden. Rose de Rescht is a fantastic rose in that it will do quite well in part shade, very fragrant, and winter hardy. Mine are own root, and like to spread and create and create clumps.
