Terry, if your rose is grafted, these may simple be suckers from the grafted roots. Rose de Rescht has distinctive enough leaves that you might be able to decide just by comparison with the parent plant. If you can find the bud union, the location of the graft, you can check if the new plants originate from above the graft (in which case they are Rose de Rescht) or from below the graft (in which case they are the root variety and of no interest). If the new plants seem to be Rose de Rescht, you should still check by digging down carefully with your hands to see if they have an established root system, in which case they can be transplanted in the Spring. I would cut the tie to the mother plant with a knife before using a shovel to move the plants.

I have Comte de Chambord. I bought it as a young bareroot last year. It went straight to the ground. It has gotten taller and leafed out. I am waiting for my 1st bloom! Comte de Chambord is planted next to La Reine in my garden.

I was not trying to turn it into a cut flower. Even on the bush three days is tops for me. In fact, once it reaches the fully open state, the petals are usually falling by the end of that day. I do like it a lot, and am happy to find out it roots easily as it would be interesting to try it out in different locations. It is also setting hips which I would have believed to be unusual for a rose with such a high petal count.

Hi Terry. Thanks for your thoughts. I definitely see what you are saying about the size, I appreciate that. I was under the impression they did not get that big but I will take the word of someone who grows it compared to the estimates of a catalog. I have a question for you. What is the damask 'crud'? BS I can deal with and yes so far we are Japanese Beetle free here in California. I read the posts about all you poor folks have to deal with and just cannot imagine the frustration you go through with those little monsters. I see now also that Sequoia has this baby.
