About suckers -- rose de Rescht

I have a rose de Rescht, still in the one-gallon pot it came in. It's doing very well and should probably be potted up by now. The other day I noticed that it is sending out a sucker, through a hole at the bottom/side of the pot. The sucker is maybe 3 inches long right now. If I remove the rose from the pot, the sucker will almost certainly break off. Can I cut it off and root it? Or is it just a goner? I imagine there will be more before long, but I'd like to save it if I can. I suppose I could slice open the pot and remove the rose without tearing off the sucker--then do I just pot up the rose in the new pot, with the sucker at the bottom? My plan is to keep this rose in a pot, as my garden bed is very small and I don't want it suckering everywhere -- but it would be nice to save this one if I can! Thank you,

Sheba
