My new kitchen is a disaster! Please advise!
Comments (45)Thanks for asking doraville! My painter tried another light tan. It was awful but I let him take his turn. For my turn, I chose SW Dried Thyme.....perfecto! If it didn't work, I was going to go through with a professional consultation...... It's a dark-ish green (thanks alabamanicole!), slightly on the cool side, I'd call it a fresh tone. Not warm, not really a cool either IMO. So, the green will go in the kitchen and breakfast nook. The kitchen is separated from the main part of the house by 2 doorways and a big pass-thru. I'm going to get an almost match off-white for the trim in the kitchen and breakfast nook so I don't have any bright white near my cabinets. I'm feeling good about it again. My backsplash material was brought in today and now I'm back to being terrified of tile. What if it looks terrible, ugly, weird? etc. If I could rewind, I'd consult a KD for sure............. If it weren't for this forum and the bath forum, I'd be institutionalized by now! lol....See MoreMedallion Cabinet Disaster
Comments (3)I would say that the bulk of your issues are Menard's fault and the 'sales clerk' they hired. They failed to educate you on Medallion's specifications and they botched the order. Their QS Oak has some regular cut oak...it's in the spec book. It's also red oak. I prefer QS White oak....so I refer my clients to Showplace Cabinets. They have great looking QS Oak cabinets with no mix of regular cut (I am pretty sure on that)...maybe except for some moldings. I think that the cabinet manufacturers should wake up to the home centers. The people running these departments, usually have no business working there. They are NOT qualified! If they do offer cabinets to a home center...simplify it for these people, whom rarely have more than 3-5 yrs of experience. Don't do a full line offering. I have been selling/designing with Medallion for over 10 years. I rarely have an issue with their customer service....See More(X-Post) Kitchen Cabinet Disaster with Aura - please help!
Comments (5)Airless is not a finishing tool. It is meant to throw paint on the outside of the house where you do not need a fine finish. You need a fine finish on your cabinets, just like a furniture finish. They need to use an HVLP sprayer. It is a fine sprayer used on furniture and cars etc. HVLP is not for painting the outside of the house. I am sorry if I sound pedantic. Aura is a high viscosity coating. It is not so easy to spray without the right equipment. It requires a 4 stage HVLP sprayer. There is lots of good info on the Apollo HVLP site. I hope I don't sound like I am trying to sell equipment. I've used an Apollo for years on all sorts of projects, including refinishing my kitchen cabinets 10 years ago to rejuvenate a miserable old kitchen. All the drips etc can be sanded out and resprayed. Here is a link that might be useful: HVLP sprayers...See MoreXenon under cabinet light disaster
Comments (3)An easy solution is to install a dimmer switch so that you can adjust the light to any level you want, rather than just "high" or "low". Make sure you get a dimmer switch that is specifically for low voltage lighting. A low-voltage dimmer costs about $50 if you buy it online. My xenon undercabs are bright white when fully on, providing excellent work light for my counter, and when I dim them, they soften to nice mood lighting, not yellow at all. I have the Juno Trac12's. I really like them. One thing that has been cautioned on this forum about the Kichler's is that Kichler makes two types, open and closed. The closed mean that the bulbs are enclosed in a plastic casing rather than having the bulbs open to the air. That has two disadvantages - it causes heat build-up, and it changes the light quality of the bulbs. Although you don't say which one you have, I wonder if you do indeed have the closed Kichlers. My Juno's are open....See Moreghostlyvision
