red roots invading soil in new beds

I planted some vegetable beds recently and after a few weeks the soil became invaded by a network of red roots. It was only underneath the surface and seemed to actually eat holes in the soil as time went by. Can anybody help me identify it? They look like roots but have no plants above the surface. Somebody said it was dodder vine but it doesn't look or behave like dodder (which we do have in our garden though...). It is much more like a fine root network underground than the rubbery, stringy dodder that we have on trees. Thanks :D
