Aloe vera vs aloe vera?
Comments (4)There seems to be some confusion again with common names - Aloe vera is Aloe vera :-) Although that term is sometimes used to refer to ANY kind of aloe, there are not two species of true or common, aka medicinal aloe. There ARE many species of aloe....as many as 400 have been registered but true aloe, Aloe vera (formerly Aloe barbadensis), is the one noted for medicinal purposes. There is some documentation that Aloe arborescens also has similar medicinal properties but as the species name suggests, this has a much more tree-like growth habit and develops a distinct stem or trunk. The difference in growth habits between the two plants shown in the pics is simply due to age and maturity. Aloe vera will form a full rosette if given sufficient time and proper growing conditions. Check the Wiki photo linked below. The smaller ones that appear to only grow laterally rather than in a round rosette of leaves are just young, immature plants (offsets or pups) and hampered from full development by lack of time and indoor growing conditions. Comments (2)Where do you live, and is it damp around the plants, do you have gophers or squirells, do they need water the animals that is, many things gould cause this problem, mine was grasshoppers. I don't know what yuurs is. Treat accordingly. Could be tortoise, gopher, snails, rabbits, depending where you live and what critters live where you planted it. Comments (6)Change the soil, cut off all dead roots, use the right soil mix. water and fertilize once a week if the plant has live roots. Make sure it has plenty of fresh air, sun. Sun is needed to grow well. Don't let it sit in water, and don't water if the soil is still damp. Put a chop stick or pencil down in to the mix and see if it is perfectly dry. Pick up the pot and feel the weight, then feel the weight after it is watered. When you water make sure it is thorough. Water must readh the root ball. Give it love, make sure it is healthy. Do not use Peat moss in the soil, make sure the mix drains fast. If this doesn't work bury it and say a prayer. It bends over to reach the sun. Gradually put it into the sun, if you were going to the beach now when it is hot and sun out, wouuld you get a sun burn if you were out for a few hours? Don't just give you plant a drink, put it in the shower and drench it for 5 minutes, the water must reach the center of the root ball not just the edges around the pot. I don't know what more to tell you at at moment. I don't have any books to send, which you do need. I wish I could be of more help. Norma...See MoreAloe vera leaves drying out at the tips
Comments (4)Sorry to disagree, but no, one shouldn't necessarily cut back on watering these Aloes in Winter (or maybe just cut it back a bit). Many Aloes can grow all winter long & since they bloom in Feb. I definitely wouldn't cut back watering in winter -- unless you're keeping them, pretty cool. In NYC, next to cold window over warm radiator, my Aloes stay in growth all winter....See Moredbarron
